What: Flying Carpet Air Transport & Services Piper PA-28-235 Pathfinder Where: Beirut International Airport, Lebanon When: Dec 11, 2010 Why: In the course of inclement weather in Beirut, a number of small planes (including the above-listed Piper) parked on the tarmac were damaged. The storm caused delay in incoming /outgoing flights, heavily damaging at least four small training planes which were flipped or rammed into electrical poles. Winds were tracked at over 60 mph. Waves reached a height of up to 23 feet (7 meters). Heavy rains flooded the streets in Beirut and snow forced some road closures in remote mountain towns.

MAK, the Interstate Aviation Committee investigated the Mar 22nd crash of the Aviastar-TU Tupolev TU-204-100 ferry flight en route from Hurghada Egypt to Moscow, and banned it from operating as a passenger airline. On the day of the crash, after the flight control computer failed, the Tu-204 flew 700 feet left of the runway when it was landing. The pilot was found to have “poor training” on simulators that did not correspond with the plane. According to Flight Global, “the crew failed to execute a go-around.”

What: Piper PA-28R-180 Cherokee Arrow en route from Kingston to Sudbury, Ontario Where: Devine Lake in Algonquin Park When: Saturday October 10 Who: Pilot Kevin Houle, wife Lorraine Houle, granddaughter Emily and her boyfriend, Michael Rollins Why: It is speculated that the plane ran into weather as a distress call was heard from the plane, and the weather was rainy and icy at the time.
The plane hit a tree and one of the wings was broken.
The family was killed in the crash.
The plane belonged to Kevin’s company, Tracks & Wheels Equipment Brokers. Kevin had been a pilot for a couple of years.

What: Emirates Airlines Airbus A380-800 en route from Dubai to Toronto Where: Ottowa When: Jun 1st 2012 Who: 530 aboard Why: On approach to Toronto, the pilot entered a holding pattern due to bad weather, but on approach, was alerted to windshear, and made another precautionary go-round due to gusty conditions. They diverted to Ottowa where they made a safe landing. the plane touched down safely shortly after 5 p.m.
The plane refueled, and made a safe landing in Toronto at Pearson after 9 pm.
Pilots had declared (and undeclared) a fuel emergency on approach to Ottowa. After landing, the runway was inspected.

What: Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-300 en route from Jakarta to Yogyakarta (Indonesia) Where: Yogyakarta When: Dec 20th 2011, 17:35 Who: 131 passengers Why: The plane aborted an approach to Yogyakarta due to weather and low visibility. The flight diverted to Solo, where it could not land due to weather; and diverted again to Surabaya where the flight landed to refuel. Meanwile, weather conditions at Yogyakarta improved, so the pilots returned to Yogyakarta, and proceeded to land at a higher than normal speed in the hard rain. The plane veered off the runway, with brakes rendered ineffective due to rain, and came to a stop 60 meters past the runway, with collapsed nose gear and with fuselage damage. Bits and pieces of the plane were scattered along the runway.
Passengers exited via emergency slide. Five passengers reported injury.

What: Turkish Sikorsky S-70 Where: Herekol mountain, Turkey When: Nov 10, 2012 Who: 17 aboard 17 fatalities Why: Three crew members and 14 police special forces were aboard the Turkish Sikorsky S-70 when it crashed in poor weather conditions.
The weather was described as heavy fog and rain.
The official statement by Siirt province governor Ahmet Aydin was that the “… helicopter hit a hill due to unfavourable weather conditions caused by a thick fog and heavy rains.”

Update: The investigation team formed to probe into Friday’s plane crash on Monday (April 23) visited the site and collected evidence. What: Bhoja Air Boeing 737-200 en route from Karachi to Islamabad Where: Islamabad When: Apr 20th 2012 Who: 121 passengers and 6 crew Why: The plane (reported as #AP-BKC a 27 year old Boeing) took off from Karachi, impacted the ground 3-6 miles from Islamabad while on approach and burst into flames in a rural location(Hussain Abad village) near Chaklala Air Base. No survivors were found, and ten houses on the ground were affected. The plane lost contact with the control tower minutes before landing. There was no distress call. There are conflicting reports that the plane was on fire and was not on fire before it impacted the ground. Some reports say the plane was struck by lightning. There was a thunderstorm at the time of the accident. The fire/fireball after the crash does not appear to have engulfed the entire debris area, according to photos of the scene.
Debris from the crash is said to cover a large muddy area. The area has not been cordoned off; reporters and others are swarming over the crash site.
This is reported to be the first Bhorja flight on this route. The jet left at 17:00 and was due to arrive at 18:50.
The flight data recorder has been recovered along with 110 bodies (so far.)
The number of people listed as passengers varies from 127 to 130 aboard.
