    Thai Lion Air Co-Pilot Passes out Mid Air, Dies

    Thai Lion AirThe Thai Lion Air flight SL8537 from Hat Yai to Bangkok, Thailand, had to return for emergency landing on August 20, after the co-pilot collapsed midair.

    The Dutch co-pilot Peter Esberte, 47 lost consciousness just 20 minutes after the Boeing 737-900 aircraft took off. The pilot then decided to return to Hat Yai airport where he made an emergency landing at 1:21 p.m.

    Esberte later died on the way to hospital from the airport. The cause of death is not yet known, however, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (Aerothai) said Esberte died of a heart attack.

    Worawut Kongkositkul, in-charge of flight operations for the low cost airline, said that Esberte joined the airline last year at its launch and was completely healthy.

    All 152 passengers aboard the plane remained unharmed.

    Royal Jordanian Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Doha

    Royal Jordanian Airlines flight RJ-611 had to divert for an emergency landing in Doha, Qatar, on May 18th.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane heading from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to Amman, Jordan, was diverted after the crew found an unidentified object on-board.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    Upon checking, the security forces did not find any hazardous material.

    China Southern Airlines Flight Returns to Melbourne due to Flaps Problem

    China Southern Airlines flight CZ-344 had to return and make an emergency landing in Melbourne, Australia, on February 3rd.

    The Airbus A333-300 plane took off for Guangzhou, China, but had to turn back due to an issue with the flaps.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Emergency Landing on Florida Interstate


    What: Piper PA 32 en route from Davis Island
    Where: I-75 at Gibsonton Drive, Florida
    When: August 23, 2012
    Who: 3 aboard
    Why: The pilot, Charles Pulliam took off from Davis Island en route to Opa Locka AIrport, but began losing oil and had to make an emergency landing. He struck a power line but managed to land on the shoulder of I-75 Northbound. His right wing was cut off halfway after striking a road sign, but neither Pulliam nor his two passengers were injured.

    Robinson R22 Blown Down in Hong Kong

    Where: on the site of Hong Kong’s former Kai Tak international airport
    When: May 3
    Who: 2
    Why: During strong winds, the helicopter crashed into a coach parked about 100m away from the Hong Kong Aviation Club. The pilot and his son who was aboard were injured, as well as the coach driver; and all involved were taken to a local hospital. After the crash, the helicopter was reported as leaking fuel.

    Banner Plane Ditches in Myrtle Beach Surf

    Why: A pilot flying a plane dragging a banner ditched his plane in the surf off Myrtle Beach. 30 beachgoers rescued the helicopter pilot and a tow crew removed the plane’s wings to pull it on to the beach. The pilot survived and the damage to the plane appears to be minimal.
