    SD: More Firefighting Tragedy Strikes

    Why: A C-130 transport aircraft en route to support firefighting missions crashed in South Dakota. The crew was part of the fight against the White Draw Fire.

    The USAF Release said:

    PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. (AFNS) — At approximately 6 p.m. MDT July 1, a Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System equipped C-130 aircraft supporting firefighting missions crashed in the southwest corner of South Dakota. The aircraft was supporting the efforts against the White Draw Fire.

    The cause of the crash is not known and the incident is under investigation. There are no details on the status of the aircrew available at this time.

    MAFFS is a joint DoD and U.S. Forest Service program designed to provide additional aerial firefighting resources when commercial and private airtankers are no longer able to meet the needs of the forest service.

    MAFFS is a self-contained aerial firefighting system owned by the U.S. Forest Service that can discharge 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in less than 5 seconds, covering an area one-quarter of a mile long by 100 feet wide. Once the load is discharged, it can be refilled in less than 12 minutes.

    .CHARLOTTE NC – The crash of a North Carolina-based Air National Guard cargo plane that was fighting wildfires in South Dakota has left at least one crew member dead.The family of Lt. Col. Paul Mikeal of Mooresville confirmed they were notified early Monday that he had died in the C-130 crash on Sunday. The 42-year-old married father of two was a veteran of deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.Lt. Col. Rose Dunlap of the 145th Airlift Wing in Charlotte says six crew members were aboard.The North Carolina Air National Guard confirmed that lives were lost in the crash. Other crew members who were injured were taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Names and conditions have not been released.The plane went down about 6 p.m. in the southwest corner of South Dakota where it had been dropping flame retardant on the White Draw Fire.The cause of the crash is under investigation and all other MAFFS-equipped C-130s have been grounded.

    Singapore Airlines Plane Diverts to Indonesia due to Smoke Indication

    Singapore airlinesSingapore Airlines flight SQ-7108 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Denpasar International Airport in Bali, Indonesia, on October 26.

    The Boeing 747-400 freighter aircraft was transporting 2,186 sheep from Sydney, Australia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, when the crew received smoke indication in a cargo bay and declared emergency.

    The plane landed safely. All four crew members aboard remained unhurt.

    It is believed that the exhaust gasses and sheep manure was the cause of smoke indication.

    The plane resumed its journey after 2.5 hours.

    Helicopter Pilot Walks Away from Hard Landing


    What: Enstrom F-28F helicopter en route from Elko, Nevada to Twin Falls Idaho
    Where: Twin Falls, Idaho.
    When: May 20, 2012
    Who: Pilot
    Why: The pilot reported that ten miles south of the Twin Fall Airport, he contacted the control tower that was inbound for landing. However, then he told ATC that he would not be able to make it to the airport with the problems he was having.

    He subsequently made a precautionary landing to an open field with control problems with the helicopter. During landing, the helicopter’s tail boom separated from the aircraft.

    The pilot is the owner of the helicopter, and was not injured.

    AA Jet Makes Emergency Landing at Heathrow Airport

    American AirlinesAmerican Airlines flight AA65 had to make an emergency landing at London’s Heathrow Airport, on February 23.

    Emergency was declared aboard the Boeing 767-300 aircraft after its windscreen cracked. The plane was heading from Zurich, Switzerland, to New York at the time.

    The plane landed uneventfully and no one was hurt.

    It is not clear how the windscreen cracked.

    Southwest Airlines Plane Overruns Runway at Burbank Airport

    Southwest Airlines flight WN-278 overran the end of the runway on landing at Burbank Airport, California, on December 6th.

    The incident happened when the Boeing 737-700 plane was coming from Oakland, California.

    The passengers disembarked via stairs. No injuries were reported.

    Trooper Lands Cessna after Geese Strike


    What: Iowa State Patrol en route from Sioux City to Atlantic
    Where: Denison airport
    When: Mar 6 2012
    Who: Pilot Trooper Scott Pigsley
    Why: Scott Pigsley was returning from searching for a woman when his plane struck geese. At the time, he knew something had happened, but wasn’t sure what it was until after he landed and saw the damage to the single engine Cessna he was flying. The goose or geese left dents on the wings, a broken wheel cover and blood on the Cessna, but the problems Pigsley had encountered involved the engine.
