What: Delta Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from New York to Los Angeles,CA Where: New York When: Apr 19th 2012 Who: 172 passengers and 7 crew Why: After taking off from JFK, the plane had a bird strike. A bird was ingested by a right engine, which caused an engine failure. Pilots informed ATC.
Passengers feared the worst as they saw the birds, heard the impact and smelled the smoke, but the cool headed pilot was able to make a visual landing while flying on one engine.
Matthew Kroll, told reporters”We were taking off and two seconds off the ground, the whole plane shutters and you hear this low growl. Then you smell the smoke in the cabin. People were relatively calm because it happened about three second after take-off. Everyone saw what happened and you could smell it. It was more dead bird than smoke. The pilot came out and said we have to circle back. It took about four minutes and we were back on the runway.”

What: Delta Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Los Angeles to New York Where: Las Vegas When: Jun 16th 2011 Why: While en route, the right windshield of the Boeing developed a crack.
The flight crew diverted to Las Vegas where they made a safe landing. The disposition of the passengers is not known, though we presume that the passengers were provided alternative flights to Kennedy airport

What: British Airways Boeing 757-200 en route from London Heathrow,EN to Barcelona Where: Barcelona When: Aug 2nd 2009 Who: 176 passengers 2 pilots and 5 crew members Why: When smoke was detected in the cabin en route, the crew declared an emergency. The flight landed safely in Barcelona, and passengers debarked via slides. The examination of the plane as it was checked for fire which delayed the passengers retrieval of baggage, but no actual source of smoke or fire was ever detected.

What: SAS Scandinavian Airlines Boeing 737-700 en route from Bergen to Oslo (Norway) Where: Bergen When: Mar 2nd 2011 Who: 89 passengers Why: After takeoff, the right engine started misbehaving, making rude noises and sparking. The pilots had to return to Bergen to get the engine’s attitude adjusted.

What: American Eagle Aerospatiale ATR-72-500 en route from Lawton to Dallas Where: Dallas When: Apr 10 2010 Why: On landing in Dallas, the plane’s main gear door fell from the aircraft.
The incident occurred a few months after the Federal Aviation Administration proposed a multimillion-dollar civil fine against Fort Worth-based American Eagle Airlines for flying planes with inadequate repairs. Eagle flew 1,178 flights with improperly repaired landing gear doors on four Bombardier aircraft, violating rules set by the FAA.

What: American Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Boston to San Juan, Puerto Rico Where: Logan International Airport When: Saturday 8:35 a.m-9:30 am Who: 185 on board Why: After smoke was detected in the cabin, the flight turned toward to Logan, and the crew found and put out the fire. The flight continued on to Logan, where passengers took alternative flights.
