    Piedmont Airlines Flight Returns to Long Island MacArthur Airport

    Piedmont Airlines flight PDT-4868 had to return and make an emergency landing at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip, New York, on May 16th.

    The plane took off for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but had to return shortly afterwards after a light bulb in the cockpit started emitting smoke.

    The plane landed back safely. All 40 passengers and 3 crew members remained unharmed.

    Cathay Dragon Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Hydraulic Problem

    Cathay Dragon flight KA-169 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Mandalay, Myanmar, on August 31st.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane heading from Kolkata, India, to Hong Kong, China, was diverted due to a hydraulic issue.

    The plane landed safely. All one hundred and thirty passengers and seven crew members remained safe.

    KLM Plane Returns to California due to Low Oil Pressure

    KLM flight KL-602 had to return and make an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport, California, on July 13th.

    The Boeing 747-400 flying to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, was mid-air when the crew decided to return due to an indication of low oil pressure in one of its engines. The engine had to be shut down.

    The plane landed safely.

    No one was injured.

    Engine Catches Fire Midair; Flybe Plane Makes Safe Emergency Landing in Belfast

    FlybeFlybe flight BE130 made an emergency landing at Belfast international airport, Northern Ireland, on the night of December 16.

    The flight, en-route from Glasgow to Belfast City Airport, was diverted after one of its engines caught fire midair.

    The plane landed uneventfully and all 76 passengers and 4 crew members remained unharmed.

    The airline said in a statement, “Flybe can confirm that flight BE130 from Glasgow to Belfast City diverted to Belfast International Airport due a small engine fire, which was extinguished before landing…At no time was the safety and wellbeing of passengers compromised…Flybe operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers guidelines.”

    The cause of engine fire is under investigation.

    Malaysia Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Australia

    Malaysia Airlines flight MH-122 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Alice Springs Airport, Australia, on January 18th.

    The Airbus A330-300 plane heading from Sydney, Australia, to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was diverted after the crew needed to shut down one the engines.

    The plane landed safely. All two hundred and fifty-five people aboard remained unharmed.

    What: Sun Express Boeing 737-800 en route from Germany to Turkey
    Where: Thessaloniki airport
    When: Jan 22, 2010
    Who: 69 (?) aboard (62 passengers and 6 crew) (disagreeing sources)
    Why: After a crew member found a note written on a restroom mirror saying “Bomb. We are going to die today,” and an unknown person called the pilot and told him of a bomb on the aircraft, the crew diverted the plane to Thessaloniki airport.

    The plane was isolated and searched. However no bomb was found. An individual was briefly detained (first in Greece, later in Turkey) for having a pen with ink matching the message on the mirror .
