What: Conviasa Aerospatiale ATR-42-300 en route from Puerto Ordaz to Porlamor Venezuela Where: Puerto Ordaz When: Sep 13 2010 Who: 51 aboard, 15 fatalities, 36 passengers and crew survived Why: After takeoff while 10 miles from Manuel Piar International Airport, the crew experienced “control problems” requiring a return to the airport. Between the Caribbean island of Margarita and Puerto Ordaz, the plane crashed. 36 survivors were recovered from the wreckage and taken to hospitals and the remains of 2 were recovered.
As of Sept 18, the number of dead has risen to 17. Conviasa is suspending flights for two weeks for safety assessments.
The pilot was Conviasa Ramiro Cardenas.
The plane crashed in the Sidor Steel Mill junkyard/storage area amid heaps and barrels of unused steel.
While attempting an emergency landing, the plane became entangled with electrical wires and crashed.
Current reports indicate 23 survivors. We will be updating as we hear news.

What: Polish Air Force Tupolev TU-154M Where: Smolensk When: Apr 10th 2010 Who: 88 passengers and 8 crew Why: On approach to Smolensk North Airport in dense fog, the plane impacted a forest, coming to rest short of the runway. There are conflicting reports leading up to the decision to land at Smolensk (versus Minsk or Moscow), holding pattern, the number of approaches.
Everyone aboard the flight was lost, including Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria, the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers.

A US Navy Sikorsky MH-53E Sea Dragon crashed off a Norfolk Virginia beach, killing one of five aboard. The helicopter was assigned to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron Fourteen.
Three were injured and hospitalized at at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A rescue team is searching for one crewman who is still missing.

What: Rostov ROSTO Where: 20 km from Naryn-Khuduk, Kalmykia Russia When: Feb 6 2011 Who: 2 aboard, 2 fatalities Why: At around 14:00, the crew made an emergency landing because of engine trouble and then fixed it. The helicopter was engaged in shooting wolves in the Chernozemelskiy region of Kalmykia. Shortly after liftoff, the Mi-2 helicopter crashed Saturday, killing both crew members (pilot and mechanic). The helicopter—reportedly belonging to either the “Russian Defense Sports and Technical Organization” or “Aero Club”—apparently could not keep aloft.

What: single engine Cessna Where: agricultural field off of D Street, behind Mervyns near Lompoc Airport Santa Barbara County When: after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon Dec 10 Who: 77-year-old pilot James Foley suffered injuries, was taken to hospital but did not survive. Why: The plane was flying eratically, before crashing into wires and falling to the ground. The cause is under investigation.
