    Laser Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Caracas

    Laser Airlines flight QL-940 had to return and make an emergency landing in Caracas, Venezuela, on February 17th.

    The plane took off for Maracaibo, Venezuela, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew needed to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane landed back safely. All 148 people aboard remained unharmed.

    Continental Emergency Landing

    What: Continental Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Tel Aviv to Newark,NJ
    Where: Tel Aviv
    When: Nov 9th 2011
    Who: 280 aboard
    Why: When smoke was reported as coming from the baggage compartment, the pilots returned to Ben-Gurion International Airport and made a safe landing.

    45 ambulances and 17 mobile units were on the scene of the emergency landing.

    The origin of the smoke turned out to be an oven in the aft galley.

    Delta Jet Makes Safe Emergency Landing in Managua

    250px-Delta_logo.svgA Delta airliner had to return and make an emergency landing at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport in Managua, Nicaragua, on March 6.

    The Airbus 320, carrying 124 passengers, was taking off from the airport when the crew reported an issue in its forward landing gear. The pilot then turned back and made a safe emergency landing in Managua. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    According to director of Nicaraguan Institute of Civil Aviation Mario Altamirano, “They were preparing for an emergency landing and made it in what we call ‘dead time,’ in other words, when it wouldn’t conflict with other flights.”

    Southwest Flight loses Pressure

    What: Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-300 en route from Islip Long Island to Chicago
    Where: Buffalo-Niagara International Airport
    When: May 07, 2010
    Who: 120 passengers
    Why: While en route, the plane developed a cabin air pressurization problem. The pilot decided to divert to Buffalo, and made a safe landing. Passengers disembarked and boarded an alternative flight to Chicago.

    Iberia Express Flight Diverts to Gran Canaria Airport

    Iberia Express flight IB-3843 diverted to Gran Canaria Airport, Spain, on June 25th.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane heading from La Palma Airport to Madrid, Spain, was diverted after one of the engines ingested multiple birds during takeoff.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    Thomsonfly Emergency Landing in London

    What: Thomsonfly Boeing 757-200 en route from Newcastle UK to Larnaca Cyprus
    Where: London
    When: Oct 22nd 2006
    Who: 160 passengers and 7 crew
    Why: The cabin began developing a haze and fumes, and requested a landing in London. By the time they landed, oxygen masks were called for. After some testing, maintenance was able to determine that the right engine was burning oil because the #1 bearing floating seal ring was found broken in two places allowing oil to escape.
