    Cirrus Crashes in Gary

    What: Gandy Air LLC Cirrus SR22 GTS G3 Turbo en route from Smyrna to Gary
    Where: A mile SE of the Gary Chicago Int. Airport
    When: Oct 3, 2012, 11:00 a.m.
    Who: 2 aboard, 2 fatalities
    Why: A plane that took off from Smyrna, Tenn. General Airport crashed for unknown reasons in a wooded area about 400 feet from the Lighthouse Charter School in Gary. The bodies of the two men aboard were retrieved from the scene of the crash around 5:35 p.m.

    No one reported a distress signal. A witness in Gary heard the plane’s engine “sputter” before the plane crashed. Many of the 650 students of West Gary Lighthouse Charter School heard the plane come down.

    Nellis: Canadian Hornet Jettisons Tanks

    What: Canadian CF-18 Hornet en route from McCarran International Airport
    Where: Nellis Air Force Base
    When: Oct. 24, 2009
    Who: Not Available
    Why: Pilots declared an in-flight emergency, jettisoned its external fuel tanks (full fuel tanks add weight to landings making them perilous), and made an emergency landing at Nellis Air Force Base. Although a cause has not been officially released, the incident is purportedly attributed to engine problems.

    Tanks landed on federal property.

    No injuries were reported.

    Etihad Airways Flight Returns to Hong Kong due to Flaps Control Issue

    Etihad Airways flight EY-833 had to return and make an emergency landing in Hong Kong, China, on January 11th.

    The Airbus A330-200 plane took off for Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a flaps control problem.

    The plane landed safely after burning off excess fuel.

    All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    ExpressJet Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Fuel Imbalance

    ExpressJetExpressJet flight EV-3945 made an emergency landing in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on September 5th.

    The plane heading from Newark, New Jersey, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was diverted after the crew reported a fuel imbalance.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    Condor Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Shannon Airport

    CondorCondor flight DE-4156 had to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Ireland, on March 19.

    The Boeing 767-300 was heading from Frankfurt, Germany to Cancun, Mexico, when a smoke alarm went off. The pilot then diverted the flight to Shannon Airport, where it made a safe emergency landing.

    All 238 people aboard remained unharmed.

    The airline arranged an alternate aircraft for passengers.

    Italy Investigates Easyjet Turbulence Incident in Venice

    What: Easyjet Airbus A319-100 en route from Bristol UK to Venice
    Where: Venice
    When: Jul 24th 2009
    Who: one passenger, two crew members
    Why: En route, the flight encountered turbulence.

    Turbulence in-flight: wounded on board an A319 in Venice Tessera
    Following the signal received by the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB, entity of the United Kingdom), which is informed by the airline concerned, the Agency initiated an investigation on the July 24 incident in which the Airbus G-A319 encountered strong turbulence resulting in injuries to two crew members and a passenger.
