    What: Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 en route from Sao Paulo Guarulhos,SP to Munich
    Where: Sao Paulo
    When: Feb 21, 2011
    Who: not available
    Why: Thirty minutes after takeoff, the plane developed smoke.

    The pilots returned to Sao Paulo where they made a safe landing. The passengers who were not rebooked were scheduled to fly to Munich 19 hours later.

    US Airways Diverts to Gander

    What: US Airways Boeing 757-200 en route from Dublin to Charlotte
    Where: Gander
    When: May 8th 2012
    Why: After taking off from Dublin, one of the engines developed a situation not unlike a stuck carburetor.

    Pilots troubleshooted (troubleshot?) the problem but then shut down the engine and diverted to diverted to Gander, where they made a safe landing.

    The mechanical repair was performed. (The issue was mechanical, not digital.) Meanwhile, a replacement flight was provided to transport the passengers to Charlotte.

    United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Honolulu

    United Airlines flight UA-372 had to return and make an emergency landing in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 19th.

    The Boeing 777-200 plane took off for San Francisco, California, but had to turn back due to an engine issue.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Four Tires Burst as Lufthansa Plane Lands on Mumbai Airport

    LufthansaA Lufthansa plane burst four tires upon landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, India, on May 13th.

    The Airbus A330-300 was performing flight LH-764 from Munich, Germany, when four of the ten tires burst.

    There were 163 passengers aboard at the time; none of them were injured.

    Azores Airlines Plane Returns to Portugal after Bird Strike

    Azores AirlinesAzores Airlines flight S4-134 had to return and make a safe emergency landing at Lajes Field, Lajes Air Base, Portugal, on July 15th.

    The Airbus A320-200 en-route to Lisbon, Portugal had just departed Lajes’s runway when the crew reported a bird strike resulting in engine failure.

    The plane landed safely. All 109 people onboard remained unharmed.

    The flight was cancelled.

    US$5,850 to Crash Victims

    What: Merpati Nusantara Xian MA-60 en route from Sorong to Kaimana
    Where: Kaimana, West Papua

    Who: 21 passengers (including 2 children and a baby), 4 crew, 2 technicians
    Why: After flying a holding pattern for a quarter of an hour, the plane was on its final approach when it crashed in shallow water .3 miles before it reached the runway. On impact with the water, the plane broke in two and sank, with the passengers trapped within. Officials say bad weather and low visibility (6,600 ft) are responsible for the crash.


    Crash victims are being paid Rp 50 million (US$5,850) by State insurance firm PT Jasa Raharja, according to published reports. The total is 1.35 billion Rp. Reports do not say if this is an interim payment.
