Plane Crashes Mountain; 6 Fatalities

What: Aviastar Mandiri British Aerospace BAe146-300 en route from Jayapura to Wamena Indonesia
Where: Mount Pike
When: Apr 9th 2009
Who: 6 crew: captain, co-pilot, engineer, loadmaster and two flight attendants
Why: The plane was approaching runway 15 at Wamena Airport in foggy conditions, turned and air traffic control lost contact. The controller observed smoke coming from side of Gunung Pike Mountain. When search crews went to the source of the smoke, there were no survivors.

Reportedly, the plane had been carrying rice and flour and 9 tons of Aviation Turbine Fuel. The airport is surrounded by mountains.

    Boeing Emergency Landing, Dumps Fuel

    On Jan 8 2013, a Delta Airlines Boeing 777-232LR was en route from Johannesburg to Atlanta when one of the engines developed problems.

    The pilots dumped fuel and diverted to the island of Ascension where they made a safe landing. Passengers say the plane swerved and fuel came pouring out. The crew was handling problems but did not make a lot of explanations to bewildered and hysterical passengers.

    There is a British Air Force Base on the island, and the island is a British territory.

    The good news is that the pilots made a rough but safe landing on Ascension. The bad news is that Ascension is a volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean about halfway between Recife Brazil and Luanda Angola.

    Other sources say that a replacement 777-200 was flown in to Ascension, and that stranded passengers return to Atlanta was delayed less than 24 hours.

    Virgin Atlantic Flight Rescheduled over Technical Issue

    What: Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340-600 en route from London to Lagos Nigeria
    Where: London
    When: Oct 7 2010
    Who: 263 passengers, 16 crew
    Why: While en route, the flight incurred a technical emergency and returned to London where they made a safe landing.

    Virgin Atlantic provided passengers telephone and meal vouchers and hotel accommodations. The flight proceeded as scheduled the next day.

    Small Plane Crashed into Daycare Building in Fort Myers; 1 Killed, 1 Injured

    A small plane crashed into a daycare center in Fort Myers, Florida, on June 24th.

    One person was killed in the accident while another one was injured. The injured was shifted to a hospital.

    Authorities confirmed that there were no employees inside the Chico’s daycare center when the Piper PA-28 crashed into it.

    The incident is being investigated.

    DC: Turbulence on US Airways Landing

    What: US Airways/ Republic Airlines Embraer ERJ-175 en route from West Palm Beach,FL to Washington DC
    Where: Washington’s National Ronald Reagan Airport
    When: Jul 25th 2009
    Why: On the final approach, the plane was struck by turbulence and several passengers were injured. The flight landed safely. No more information has been reported–no details on the injuries or if anyone was actually hospitalized due to the turbulence injuries. One can conjecture it may have been members of the flight crew because everyone else should have been seated with belts on.

    Cessna Crashes in Ocean, No Fatalities

    What: Línea Turística Aereotuy Cessna 208B Grand Caravan en route from to Los Roques to Isla de Margarita Venezuela
    Where: Over the ocean
    When: 26 AUG 2009, 08:10
    Who: 12 passengers and a pilot
    Why: En route, the ditched in the ocean. There were no fatalitis and the passengers were rescued by a fishing boat.
