    What: Saudi Arabian Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-90 en route from Dammam (Saudi Arabia) to Cairo
    Where: Tabuk
    When: Dec 18th 2009
    Who: 119 passengers
    Why: Less than an hour and a half into the flight, the right engine developed an oil problem. The crew shut down the engine. The flight diverted to Tabuk and made a safe landing. A replacement flight was provided.

    Air France Flight 447 Airbus Missing

    What: 4 year old Air France Airbus A330-200 en route from Rio de Janeiro,RJ (Brazil) to Paris Charles de Gaulle
    Where: Missing over the Atlantic Ocean
    When: June 1
    Who: In all, there were 216 passengers (incl seven children and one baby, 82 women and 126 men) and 12 crew. 60 French citizens were on the plane. Italy said at least three passengers were Italian.The pilot had 11,000 hours of flying experience, and 1,700 hours flying this aircraft.
    Why: The last known radio contact was an automatic message made at 0133 GMT when the plane was near the Island of Fernando de Noronha; since then, the airplane has made no radio communication. Fifteen minutes after flying through a storm and strong turbulence, there was an electrical short-circuit. There is speculation that the plane may have been hit by lightning.

    Search planes left Fernando de Noronha Island looking for signs of the plane concentrating in an area 230 miles off the northeast Brazil coast. Though there is not radar over the entire ocean, the black box will be emit a signal even if it is under water.

    The flight left Rio at 7 p.m. and was expected in Paris on Monday at 11:15 a.m. By now, fuel would have run out.

    Families of the missing are being brought to an information centre at Charles de Gaulle airport.

    NJ: Piper Crash

    What: Piper Cherokee Arrow model PA28201R en route from Woodbine Municipal Airport in Cape May County
    Where: densely wooded area in Dennis Township
    When: NOVEMBER 14, 2009 11 a.m
    Who: 2 on board
    Why: No cause has been determined for the crash, although weather has been poor in the area due to Tropical Storm Ida, which has battered the Jersey Shore with high winds and rain since Thursday. At the time of the crash, cloud cover in the region was very low, about 300 feet.

    The deceased were an older man and a boy.

    Beechcraft Baron Crashes in Brazil killing 4

    What: Norte Táxi Aéreo Beechcraft 95-B55 Baron en route from Cametá to Baião
    Where: Cametá, PA Brazil
    When: Feb 16 2012, 10:00 am
    Who: 4 aboard, 4 fatalities
    Why: The Taxi service plane crashed not long after takeoff, killing the pilot, copilot and two security guards who worked transporting money for a bank. A fire ensued after the crash, and rescuers found the bodies were charred.

    The crash occurred a kilometer from the runway. The airport fire department team responded. Seripa (regional research and prevention of Aviation Accidents) is investigating.

    Unruly Diverts Westjet

    What: Westjet Airlines Boeing 737-700 en route from Calgary to Halifax
    Where: Winnipeg
    When: Jul 6th 2010
    Who: 131 on board
    Why: While en route, a passenger attempted to open a door to the plane. The flight diverted to Winnipeg where the passenger was detained and taken into custody to be charged with “endangering safety of an aircraft and interference with flight crew.” After a nearly three hour delay, the flight continued to Halifax.

    Newark Bird Strike

    What: Continental Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Newark,NJ (USA) to Hong Kong
    Where: Newark NJ
    When: Mar 10 2010
    Who: 301 aboard
    Why: After takeoff, the Boeing encountered a flock of geese, with bird strikes on the right wing and nose. The jet circled the airport to burn off fuel, then landed safely.
