Nevada: Helicopter Crash hospitalizes 2

What: R-44 Astro Helicopter
Where: Mount Charleston.NV
When: Sept 26 2009, 7 p.m
Who: pilot and 2 passengers
Why: Currently the FAA report only says “A ROBINSON R44 ROTORCRAFT, CRASHED UNDER UNKNOWN CIRCUMSTANCES, NEAR MOUNT CHARLESTON, NV.”

Three people were rescued after the place crashed into the mountain and burst into flames. One person is being treated for burns, one for undisclosed foot injuries, and one person had no visible injuries.

The accident is under investigation.

    What: Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88 en route from Hartford,CT to Atlanta,GA
    Where: Bradley International Airport, Hartford
    When: Nov 10 2010, 8:00 am
    Why: The Delta flight was on the runway and aborted the takeoff. While on the runway, the plane experienced problems with the left engine and was able to taxi to the terminal under its own steam.

    Passengers were rebooked.

    The specific problem with the engine has not been made public.

    Carolina Beach Rd Helicopter Crash Thursday March 13, 2008

    Thursday March 13, 2008-Pilot John C. Miller, 18 year veteran firefighter, died in a helicopter crash behind Strickland Surplus Inc. at 5915 Carolina Beach Road in North Carolina. Miller was a member of a water rescue and recovery team and captain of Station 5. He ran a business, Wilmington Helicopter Rental & Training, and was about to take his final test to become a certified instructor. The helicoptor was a (year 2000) Robinson R22 Beta, a “trainer”. Miller was the only person on board the two seater.

    We extend our condolences to family and friends.

    The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

    Airport Runway in Construction Impacts Fokker Accident

    What: Feeder Airlines Fokker 50 en route from Juba to Wau
    Where: Wau
    When: Mar 29th 2012
    Who: 50 aboard
    Why: THe runway has been in the process of being repaired for the past several months. The pilots were apparently not advised regarding the necessity to touch down at midpoint due to construction. The first attempt at landing was aborted; on the second, after touching down, the plane left the pavement, and stopped on the ground with a nose and main gear collapse. At least five were hospitalized.

    Passengers evacuated with some casualties, including a broken leg.

    We sincerely hope ATC and the airport will accept responsibility for any inaction on their part in this matter.

    JFK Jet Blue Bird Strike

    What: Jetblue Airbus A320-200 en route from Sacramento CA to New York
    Where: New York
    When: May 17th 2010
    Why: After landing at JFK, while taxiing on the runway, the plane encountered a bird (or flock of birds) sustaining minor damage.

    Airbus Emergency Landing in Montreal

    What: Air Transat Airbus A310-300, registration C-GTSD en route from Panama City Panama to Montreal,QC Canada
    Where: Montreal, QC Runway 06L
    When: Mar 23rd 2009
    Why: The crew reported an unsafe gear indication on approach, and initiated a go-around. They managed to lower and lock the gear but then nose gear steering was unavailable. They landed safely and had to be towed away, blocking the runway for fifteen minutes.

    What: SAS Scandinavian Canadair CRJ-900 en route from Copenhagen Denmark to Helsinki Finland
    Where: Copenhagen
    When: Dec 28th 2009
    Who: not available
    Why: While en route, the pilot determined that deicing had failed. (Prior to taking off in icy weather, planes are treated with icing retardant. One can presume that the plane was icing over in spite of the de-icing procedure.) Also, conditions in Helsinki were a factor.
