London-Bound Flybe Flight Aborted due to Bird Strike

FlybeFlybe flight BE-803 had to reject takeoff and return to the apron at Newquay Cornwall Airport, United Kingdom on September 15.

The de Havilland Dash 8-400 plane was accelerating for takeoff when a sea gull struck it, forcing the crew to reject takeoff.

The airline arranged an alternate aircraft that took the passengers to London Gatwick airport with a 2-hour delay.

US Airways Flight 1702 Crash Lands at Philadelphia International Airport

US Airways Flight 1702, which took off from Philadelphia to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, crash landed at Philadelphia International Airport, after an aborted take off. 1

The incident took place on Thursday evening, when the plane, carrying 149 passengers and 5 crew members, experienced some faults during take-off and hence attempted to land back, which caused the front landing gear of Airbus A320 to collapse.

Airport officials confirm that two passengers suffered minor injuries while all other passengers as well as crew members were evacuated safely.

According to initial reports, high wind gusts might be the reason behind the aborted take-off as high wind advisory, with warning of wind gusts as high as 60 mph in effect at the time of incident.

Mahan Air Rejects Takeoff

On September 23, 2013, a Mahan Air Boeing 747 en route from Kerman to Medinah aborted takeoff.

Fourteen of the 419 aboard were injured. There were 25 crew aboard also.

The flight was aborted after damage to the tires occurred.

There is no indication if injuries occurred due to the emergency slides or if they were a consequence of the rejected take-off. (We tend to assume that it is the crew who is most likely to be up and about during takeoff, and most likely injured; but emergency slide injuries of exiting passengers are common.)

Virgin Aborted Takeoff–Etc…

A Virgin Airlines flight taking off from Canberra aborted takeoff to avoid an incoming flight viewed by other passengers crossing in front of them to the left. Noteworthy is a report that the Virgin Airline pilots hit the brakes when ATC said “Actually, stop, because we’ve decided we’ll let this other aircraft land first and then you can take off.” Another non-collision is a good thing; as nerve-wracking as a rejected take-0ff can be, obviously it’s better than the alternative.

Boeing studies indicate one in 2000 takeoffs are aborted, though early rejected takeoffs may not always be reported.

A 1992 Takeoff Safety Training Aid Aid by the FAA says that

  • More than half the RTO accidents and incidents reported in the past 30 years were initiated from a speed in excess of V1.
  • About one-third were reported as occurring on runways that were wet or contaminated with snow or ice.
  • Only slightly more than one-fourth of the accidents and incidents actually involved any loss of engine thrust.
  • Nearly one-fourth of the accidents and incidents were the result of wheel or tire failures.
  • Approximately 80 percent of the overrun events were potentially avoidable by following appropriate operational practices.

For passengers, the terrors of flight are certainly eased when there is some explanation to go along with the crisis. Perhaps a lack of narration can be forgiven if the pilot has his hands full averting a would be crisis. Still, a couple of word scan be very comforting and enlightening.

Personally, I can say this:

Molly and I experienced a aborted takeoff from Athens.

We were past the half way mark for sure and later were told the pilot had a warning light.

The plane came to a screeching halt taking maybe 45 seconds or more to bring it to a halt.

It is a scary situation, especially since the crew in the cockpit are dealing with whatever needs to be handled and we passengers are told NOTHING.

Maybe daredevils and roller-coaster enthusiasts would get a kick out of it, but it was a kick I’d have just as well gone without.

The plane was filled with people. We all weathered it pretty darn well. I heard no screams or crying, but they’d have had to be pretty loud, because my own heartbeat drowned out everything else. I’m sure there were a lot of rapid heartbeats that moment in that plane.

But I am here now, thanks to that pilot and crew handling a situation they might not even have called a crisis.

Nose Gear Issue Aborts Airbus Takeoff from Dusseldorf

What: Belle Air Europe Airbus A320-200 en route from Dusseldorf to Pristina Kosovo
Where: Dusseldorf
When: Mar 21st 2012
Why: The Airbus was on the runway in Dussseldorf when the plane developed a problem with the nose gear. At low speed, the pilots rejected takeoff.

After sitting in the plane more than half an hour, passengers disembarked on the runway as mechanics examined the nose gear.

Passengers were bussed to the terminal.

What: Aeropostal McDonnel Douglas MD-82 en route from Valencia to Porlama
Where: Valencia Venezuela
When: Oct 8th 2011
Why: On takeoff from Valencia, an engine failed. (The same fault was repeated the next day.)

The pilots rejected takeoff.

The flight was cancelled.

What: Azul Linhas Aereas Avion de Transport Regional ATR-72-100 en route from Sao Jose do Rio Preto to Campinas
Where: Sao Jose do Rio reto, Brazil
When: Sep 24th 2011
Who: 67 aboard
Why: The pilot was on the runway for takeoff and rejected takeoff due to birds on the runway, which resulted in a brake fire.

Emergency services put out the fire. Passengers were evacuated, resulting in one injured passenger.

Passengers were booked on alternative flights.

Emirates Double Flats Abort Dubai Takeoff

What: Emirates Boeing 777-20 en route from Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to Houston

When: Jun 8 2011
Why: During takeoff from Dubai, the left and right nose gear tire burst. (For whatever reason, the first tire burst, the second probably burst due to the increased weight.)

The plane rejected takeoff, and came to rest on the runway with overheated brakes that were handled by emergency services. The plane was towed off the runway, and passengers were provided an alternative flight.

China: Airbus Leak Aborts Takeoff

What: Air Macau Airbus A321-200 en route from Beijing to Macau
Where: Beijing
When: Feb 4th 2011
Why: Takeoff was aborted when fluid started leaking (described evocatively as a fierce spray, large fluid spill, massive spray). The plane aborted takeoff, and stopped on the runway. Passengers disembarked on the runway, (hopefully were bussed or carted back to the airport) and repairs were made on the plane.

The plane had suffered a broken seal, causing an oil leak. The leak did not affect runway operation which was not cancelled/

The flight took off again nine hours later after repairs and testing.

MD-88 Flight aborted in Hartford

What: Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88 en route from Hartford,CT to Atlanta,GA
Where: Bradley International Airport, Hartford
When: Nov 10 2010, 8:00 am
Why: The Delta flight was on the runway and aborted the takeoff. While on the runway, the plane experienced problems with the left engine and was able to taxi to the terminal under its own steam.

Passengers were rebooked.

The specific problem with the engine has not been made public.

Iran Air Engine Fire Aborts Takeoff

Who: 215 aboard
Why: The flight had diverted to Vienna for fuel, and was taking off when an indicator alerted for a fire in the right engine. (Passengers heard a loud report. )

The pilot aborted the takeoff, and passengers disembarked on to the tarmac.

Phoenix: American Airlines Engine Failure at Sky Harbor

What: American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82 en route from Phoenix,AZ to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA)
Where: Phoenix
When: Sep 24 2010
Who: 147 passengers 5 crew
Why: American Airlines flight AA-806 was on the tarmac, and taking off when the pilot rejected takeoff due to engine failure. The engine scattered debris on the runway, requiring runway 7L to be shut down for cleanup by ground crews. The plane returned safely to the terminal. No injuries were reported. No indication of whether passengers were rebooked or provided an alternative flight.

Why: On takeoff, the right engine (3) suffered engine failure. The pilot aborted the takeoff. Engine debris caused some damage to the plane.

Why: After the jet suffered a bird strike, the pilot rejected takeoff. The plane was examined for damages, resulting in a delay, but was subsequently judged undamaged and allowed to depart. The plane made a safe landing in Istanbul, several hours late.

Why: While taxiing for takeoff, off duty crew reported smoke near the left wing; procedures were not followed (i.e. fire suppression system was not engaged.)

The flight was evacuated; 26 passengers were injured, and the plane received damage from exiting passengers via the overwing exit.

India suspended he six crew members as well as 4 additional crew aboard.

No fire was found.

Why: On the runway, the pilot rejected takeoff because of an engine surge. The passengers were returned to the gate, and the plane taken for inspection. Passengers were provided an alternative Boeing 767-300 to complete the flight.

Why: On takeoff, the right engine caught fire and scattered debris on the runway. The plane rejected takeoff and rolled to a stop. Subsequent flights were delayed during runway cleanup. No injuries were reported, and emergency services handled the engine fire.

Why: The pilot aborted takeoff possibly over flat tires, though the reason the pilot aborted is still a matter of question. (After the high speed runway skid, two tires are definitely blown.) There was damage to the to right main gear tires, and also some wing damage, supposedly from rubber projectile. The flight skidded several hundred feet and rolled to a stop about 500 feet from the runway’s end. Passengers debarked without incident; and maintenance crews are working on getting the plane towed. Several flights have been cancelled due to the runway closure.

Who: 38 passengers and 4 crew
Why: On takeoff, the left engine failed. The pilot aborted the takeoff, and with the gear retracted, the plane skid along the runway on its belly, incurring damage on its lower fuselage, left wing, propeller, and engine.

Passengers evacuated with no injuries reported. The left engine was on fire though, but was successfully extinguished.

Why: When the pilot aborted the takeoff due to alerts, the plane’s tires deflated due to overheating from braking. The flight was cancelled. We have no indication what the instrumentation indicated that caused the pilot to abort the takeoff.
