Why: The plane skidded off the runway while taking off, and burned for three hours before being extinguished by a full response team, a chopper and three fire engines.
The plane was loaded with 150,000 pounds of fuel. After a chopper doused water with no discernible effect, flight crews concentrated on letting the plane burn out within a small perimeter. Plumes of black smoke reached Malibu.
The three-member (civilian) crew walked away with minor injury. Alexandria, Va.-based-Omega Aerial Refueling Services, Inc. contracts with the military.
The NTSB is investigating.
