What: Japan Airlines Flight JL8878 en route from Shanghai’s Hongqiao airport for Tokyo
Where: emergency landing at Shanghai
When: Takeoff 2 p.m. and arrived at 3:14 p.m on March 14
Who: 208 passengers and 14 crew
Why: It is reported that the aircraft had hit birds after takeoff. The plane experienced engine problems and began to shake necessitating the emergency landing.

Cathay Pacific flight CX-92 had to make an emergency landing in Hong Kong, China, on April 6th.The plane took off for Anchorage, Alaska, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a low oil pressure indication in one of the engines.

Where: Rift Valley province, Kenya
When: Monday May 11
Who: 28 on board, including Kenyan Internal Security Assistant Minister Orwa Ojode, Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Mohammed Ali, Rift Valley Provincial Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan and journalists suffered injuries. Fifteen injured were taken to Nairobi Hospital.
Why: When the helicopter developed mechanical problems and lost power, it crash landed in the Rift Valley. Fuel, flight voice and data recorders have been collected, and the Russian plane builders have been invited to join the investigation.(unverified) Popular opinion is that the helicopter was too old to still be in service.

Serve Air Cargo Plane Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Failure
A Serve Air Cargo plane made an emergency landing in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, on September 10th.The plane took off for Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, but had to turn back after an engine failure.
The plane veered off runway while landing back in Goma. All four crew members remained uninjured.
American Eagle Emergency Landing

What: American Eagle flying from St. Louis to Minneapolis
Where: Quad Cities International Airport, Rock Island County, Illinois,
When: Saturday night
Who: 23 passengers and 3 crew members
Why: 20 minutes after takeoff, smoke appeared from behind the cockpit and filled the cabin with smoke. Passengers were transferred to a Northwest flight that left the airport at six Saturday night.United Airlines Plane Diverts to Vancouver over ‘Threatening Message’
United Airlines flight 1104 had to make an emergency landing at Vancouver International Airport, Canada, on January 9.The plane, heading from Anchorage, Alaska, to Denver, Colorado, was diverted after the crew discovered a threatening message from a passenger.
The plane landed uneventfully. There were 131 passengers and 6 crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained unhurt.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police office in Richmond, British Columbia, confirmed that they took the suspect in custody.
Out-of-Gas Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing on U.S. Highway 20
A 1971 Piper Cherokee 140 aircraft made an emergency landing on U.S. Highway 20 near Bend, Oregon, at around 7:15 p.m. on November 7.
The plane departed from Tracy, California and was heading to Prineville when it ran out of gas. The pilot then diverted it to Bend airport but landed on a straight stretch of highway instead, after realizing he could not make it to the airport.
There were 3 people aboard at the time of incident; none of them was injured. Sgt. Aaron Harding of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office identified them as the pilot William Espinoza, 30, his sister-in-law Rebekah Schantz-Kemper, 24 and an 11 year old girl.
The plane took off 3 hours later after refueling.
