    Mauritania: Engine Fire, Emergency Landing

    What: BMI/Astraeus Boeing 757-200 en route from Freetown Sierra Leone to London
    Where: Nouakchott Mauritania
    When: Aug 25 2010
    Who: 110 aboard
    Why: While en route the plane developed engine problems. One account says the pilot saw an engine on fire and contacted ATC for immediate clearance for an emergency landing.

    The official report says that the plane was experiencing engine surges.

    What matters is that the plane landed safely, with no casualties. A replacement plane was flown in.

    Double Helicopter Crash on Kauai

    What: Heli-Usa helicopter
    Where: Kauai, Hawaii
    When: 03 10, 2007, 1:05 pm
    Who: four fatalities, 3 injuries
    Why: As a tour was ending, after experiencing hydraulic problems, a helicopter crashed at the the northwest end of Princeville airport a hundred yards from the terminal. A description of the wreckage indicated that the front of the helicopter was torn off, the tail was snapped off, and the rotors were broken. First responders attempted to save the four fatalities.

    The pilot who had 10,000 hours on that helicopter died in the crash.

    Four injured were taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. One died en route.

    What: Smokey Mountain Helicopters out of Delaware. It’s the parent company of Inter-Island Helicopter
    Where: North shore of Kauai, Hawaii
    When: 1:05 pm
    Who: five aboard, one fatality, four injuries.
    Why: The pilot heard a loud bang, and lost control of the helicopter, which fell down in a spiral formation on to a Hanalei campsite

    The debris field is spread from the ocean to the beach. A dive team will be searching the ocean for the tail rotor, gear box and drive shaft which were flung afield. Witnesses extricated survivors out of the wreckage

    Longtime Traffic Guy Paul Cavanaugh Survives Hard Landing, Broken Chopper


    What: CBS Sky 12 Bell Ranger III traffic helicopter
    Where: 1000 W. Industrial Avenue
    When: Tuesday November 11, 2008 at 6:11 a.m
    Who: Pilot, Takayuki Tanaka and television and radio traffic reporter Paul Cavanaugh, both transported to Bethesda Hospital with minor injuries.
    Why: After the pilot reported an engine problem, he attempted to land at a Boynton Beach industrial park. Witnesses said the helicopter”did not have full power.”

    The rear rotor assembly was cutoff at mid-shaft. The news organization calls this incident a “hard landing”

    S African Helicopter Crash, 7 lost

    What: South African Police Service MBB-BK 117-B1 Helicopter
    Where: Open field about 4km from Witbank, Mpumalanga, South Africa
    When: 23-JUL-2010
    Who: 7 fatalities
    Why: 5 National Intervention Unit police officers, a pilot and a crew member died in a crash whose details are sketchy. The helicopter was one of two that were en route to assist local police in Witbank where armed thieves had just robbed a local supermarket. One helicopter arrived safely and ended up in a gun battle. The other, according to witnesses, exploded in mid-air and crashed.

    Paramedics from ER24 were dispatched to an open field where the helicopter was already burned beyond recognition.

    A piece of the tail was found 150 meters from the wreckage.

    Crash Helicopter Crashes Killing 19 in Flames in Vietnam

    A helicopter exercise in Vietnam killed 19 of 21 people aboard on July 7, 2014 at 7:50 a.m.

    Vietnam People’s Army Air Force (VPAAF), Regiment 91 suffered a loss of 19 when the Mil Mi-171 helicopter engaged in a parachute training mission crashed near village 11 in Thach That district, Vietnam, managing to impact a field instead of the residences.

    The helicopter was flying out of Hoa Lac military Airport with sixteen parachute recruits aboard.

    Two people survived the crash, with injuries. Five people had survived the crash with burn injuries, but three of them lost their lives at the hospital.

    Medical Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing in California

    A medical helicopter had to make an emergency landing on a vacant lot in Rancho Cordova, Sacramento County, California, on March 23rd.

    The helicopter was carrying a toddler with burned hands to UC Davis Medical Center when it started to smoke, prompting the crew to land.

    The helicopter landed safely.

    The toddler was transported to the hospital.
