    Virgin Australia Plane Returns to Auckland

    Virgin australiaVirgin Australia flight VA-91 had to return and make an emergency landing in Auckland, New Zealand, on July 21st.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Apia, Samoa, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a cabin pressurization problem.

    The plane landed safely. No injuries were reported.

    Southwest Airlines Makes Emergency Landing on Roatan Island

    Southwest Airlines flight WN-607 had to divert and make an emergency landing on Roatan Island, Honduras, on May 29th.

    The Boeing 737-700 was heading from San Jose, Costa Rica, to Baltimore, Maryland, when smoke was detected in the cabin, prompting the crew to divert to Roatan.

    The plane landed safely. There were 140 passengers and 8 crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained unhurt.

    The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.

    Fokker 100 Makes Emergency Landing at Zahedan Airport, Iran

    An Iranian jet en-route from the northeastern city of Mashhad to Southeastern City of Zahedan, made an emergency landing at Zahedan airport on May 10, due to landing gear malfunction.

    The Fokker 100 plane was carrying 135 passengers at the time of incident, nine of whom suffered minor injuries.

    Reza Arbabi, a spokesperson of the governor-general office of Sistan and Baluchestan province, said that one of the landing gears of the plane failed to deploy when it was about to land on the runway in Zahedan. He praised the captain for his timely reaction and skillfully handling the emergency landing.

    Two Injured After Batik Air Flight Hits Turbulence

    Batik Air flight ID-6890 encountered turbulence on the way to Kualanamu International Airport, Indonesia, on October 24th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane was flying from Jakarta, Indonesia, when it hit severe turbulence that injured a passenger and a flight attendant.

    The plane continued for a safe landing. The injured were rushed to a hospital.

    Air Tindi Plane Makes Emergency Landing on Great Slave Lake

    Air TindiAn Air Tindi Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft had to make an emergency landing on the ice of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada, on November 20.

    According to a military spokesperson, the aircraft’s engine stopped working due to bad weather after it departed from Yellowknife with 7 people aboard. The pilot wanted to land back in Yellowknife but could not make it to the air field. The flight was on its way to Fort Simpson at the time.

    According to an Air Tindi news release, “Under very difficult weather conditions, the Caravan pilot was able to land the aircraft safely and evacuate the passengers.” All passengers were airlifted with no major injuries.

    The Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

    Saudi Arabian Airlines Engine Shut Down

    What: Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from London to Jeddah Saudi Arabia
    Where: Rome
    When: Apr 6th 2011
    Who: 232 passengers
    Why: While en route, an engine developed problems and was shut down. The pilots diverted to Rome and made a safe landing. The engine indicated that it was overheated; but the mechanism was faulty. Repairs were performed, after which the flight was continued.
