    What: Aerocon Swearingen SA-227 Metroliner en route from Santa Cruz to Trinidad Bolivia
    Where: Trinidad
    When: Sep 6th 2011
    Who: 7 passengers, 2 crew
    Why: On final approach to Trinidad, the pilots lost contact with ATC.

    The instrument approach to the airport requires overflying North and then turning back.
    The last contact was reporting the flight was “in the procedure turn” but the flight did not land on the runway, and is currently considered to be missing in a mountainous area.

    Sri Lankan Air Force Plane Crashed in Hokandara; 4 Dead, 1 Injured

    FireA Sri Lankan Air Force plane crashed in Hokandara, at around 6:15 a.m. on December 12.

    The Antonov-32 aircraft was heading from Bandaranaike International Airport to Ratmalana airport when it crashed into a rubber estate in Wanaguru Mawatha.

    Atleast 4 people were killed in the accident while another was shifted to Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital with burn injuries. Authorities said he was later transferred to the General Hospital considering the seriousness of his injuries.

    Air force spokesperson Wing Commander Gihan seneviratne confirmed the accident saying that in his last communication with the control tower, the pilot reported that the airstrip was not visible due to bad weather.

    The accident remains under investigation.

    Mahan Air Plane Skids Off Runway, Crashes into Concrete Barrier at Istanbul Airport

    mahanA Mahan Air plane crashed into a concrete barrier at Istanbul Atatürk Airport, Turkey, on December 24.

    The Airbus A310 plane, performing flight W5-112 from Tehran, Iran, skidded off the runway and crashed into a concrete barrier.

    There were 150 passengers aboard at the time; all of them were evacuated safely.

    The cause of crash is under investigation.

    Plane Crashes Mobile Home in Michigan


    What: Cessna 206 en route from St. Paul to Glens Falls, N.Y.
    Where: northern Michigan
    When: 2:15 p.m
    Who: Pilot was killed in the crash.
    Why: The pilot encountered trouble near Traverse City, Mich. The plane dipped its wing, clipped some trees, then crashed through the roof of a mobile home. Residents of the mobile home were outside shoveling snow at the time and are unhurt, although the home was destroyed.

    Lost hot air balloon

    What: Dongguan Meixiang Aviation Club hot air balloon originating in Yangshuo County
    Where: Maling Township, Lipu County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China
    When: 14-OCT-2009
    Who: 4 fatalities 7 occupants
    Why: The pilots lost control of the balloon after it took off. The balloon flew to Maling county where it caught fire. Two pilots and one tourist survived the crash. Two Dutch couples died.

    All Balloon touring businesses were shut down after the incident pending safety review.

    Iowa Plane Crash Kills US Senate Candidate

    PiperA single-engine Piper PA-46 aircraft crashed near Dubuque Regional Airport, Iowa, on October 13.

    Dr. Doug Butzier, a Libertarian candidate running for the U.S. Senate seat in Iowa, was killed in the crash. He was contending against the Democratic candidate Bruce Braley.

    According to FAA spokesperson Lynn Lunsford, the plane crashed at around 11 p.m. while it was approaching the runway to make a landing. He also confirmed that the plane departed from Ankeny Regional Airport around an hour earlier.

    Butzier was the only one aboard the aircraft when it crashed.

    The NTSB is investigating.
