Dangerous Hysteria aboard Batavia Air

What: Batavia Air Boeing 737-4Y0 en route from Bali Indonesia to Kupang, Indonesia
Where: Ngurah Rai in Bali, Indonesia,

Who: 148 passengers and six crew, 6 injuries
Why: The plane had been carrying 148 passengers from Surabaya, East Java to Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. The flight had stopped overnight in Bali because El Tari Airport (the destination) was closed due to another incident. Passengers were already wound up, because they’d spent the night actually in the airport–with no overnight compensation or accommodations.

The plane was about to take off when passengers, believing the plane was on fire screamed and rushed the exits, forcing the door open and jumping from the plane. Six were injured leaping from the plane (which was not on fire) without any ramps.

Passengers had seen normal exhaust smoke when the pilot started up the engines.

    Aer Lingus Cautionary Landing in Dublin

    What: Aer Lingus Airbus A330-200, registration en route from Orlando, to Dublin
    Where: Orlando
    When: Dublin
    Who: 245 passengers and 11 crew
    Why: Just after takeoff, the left engine of the Airbus had a large oil loss and was subsequently shut down. The flight returned to the airport half an hour later and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided hotel accommodations and booked on alternative flights the next day.

    Mil Crash in Borneo

    An Indonesian Army Mil Mi-17B-5 en route to a construction site so remote it can only be reached by helicopter was flying from Tarakan to Malinau with a crew of construction workers and a 1,100 pound construction cargo when the helicopter developed engine trouble.

    Eight crew and eleven civilian construction workers went down in a jungle in Borneo, thirteen of whom died on impact.

    Four passengers and two crew survived. Eight of the fatalities were civilian construction workers, and five were military crew.

    The helicopter burned out on the ground near Bulan. The survivors suffered burns.

    Hawaiian Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Kahului

    Hawaiian Airlines flight HA-23 made an emergency landing in Kahului, Hawaii, on August 31st.

    The Boeing 767-300 plane was flying from Oakland, California, when the several passengers complained of breathing problems due to an unusual odor on board.

    The plane continued for a safe landing.

    Twelve passengers and three crew members were checked by medical teams at the airport.

    It is believed that the odor was caused by a pepper spray.

    Southwest Airlines Plane Overruns Runway in Omaha

    Southwest Airlines flight WN-1643 overran the end of the runway on landing in Omaha, Nebraska, on January 18th.

    The incident happened when the Boeing 737-800 plane was coming from Las Vegas, Nevada.

    All one hundred and fifty passengers and six crew members remained safe.

    Turkish Airlines Flight Returns to Izmir After Bird Strike

    Turkish Airlines flight TK-2909 had to return and make an emergency landing in Izmir, Turkey, on February 28th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Istanbul, Turkey, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    Emergency Landing Durban

    Who: 5 aboard
    Why: Newspapers reported this accident as the tires falling off after takeoff.

    Apparently the pilots were getting conflicting messages, and did a flyby the tower where there was visual confirmation that the landing gear were down but improperly locked.

    On touchdown, the pilot attempted to spare the right gear which eventually collapsed as the plane skid right, impacting bushes. There were no injuries reported.
