    Rescue Pilot Rescued in NZ

    What: Skyline Aviation Robinson 44 Helicopter
    Where: 20 kilometres northwest of Napier
    When: Monday Sept 15
    Who: relief pilot for the service for five years
    Why:Pilot who flew into some overhead wires and crashed while while spraying blackberry farm, was trapped beneath the wrecked helicopter with a punctured lung, a broken arm and fuel burns. His condition is critical, and he is in intensive care in Hawke’s Bay Hospital

    Uganda Helicopters Down in Kenya

    What: Ugandan helicopter Mil Mi-24 en route from Soroti to Garissa
    Where: Mount Kenya
    When: August 12, 2012
    Who: 7 aboard, 3 fatalities
    Why: Three Mi-24 were heading to Somalia. A fourth helicopter did not crash.

    Capt. William Letti and Lt. Patrick Nahamya were flying a peace-keeping mission when they crashed onto the side of Mount Kenya. They are calling it a “hard landing” i.e. in an “ungazetted” area. Two bodies were found on August 14. A third body was found a day later (August 15)

    One choppers made it to Garissa, North Eastern Kenya. 18 people from that helicopters safely evacuated.

    Two of the helicopters crashed, and were found burned.

    A pilot from one of the helicopters sent a message requesting assistance for ground troops and the grounded chopper crew.

    What: Cougar Sikorsky S-92 helicopter
    Where: Halifax airport
    When: Sept 23
    Who: 17 people on board
    Why: Chopper experienced engine failure in one of its engines while returning from an offshore rig. The helicopter landed safely and no one was injured.

    Colombian Police Helicopter Crashed in Dense Forest; 15 Killed, 2 Injured

    helicoptersaopA Black Hawk helicopter crashed in dense forest near Gulf of Uraba, Colombia, on August 4.

    Authorities suspect the helicopter, carrying 17 Colombian police officers, crashed due mechanical failure. The officers were going to the Gulf of Uraba for an important operation at the time.

    Fifteen police officers died while another 2 sustained severe burns in the crash.

    The accident is being investigated.

    Military Helicopter Crashes in Egypt; 2 Pilots Killed

    A military helicopter crashed near El-Sheikh Gebyeel Military Airport, Abi Hamad, Al-Sharqeya, Egypt, on September 19th.

    The helicopter was carrying two pilots, both of whom were killed in the crash.

    The crash presumably happened due to a technical failure inside the helicopter.

    A detailed investigation has been initiated.

    Spanish Military Helicopter Crashes in Atlantic Ocean; 3 Crew Members Missing

    helicopterA Spanish military helicopter crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, around 280 nautical miles from its destination on Gando air base, Gran Canaria Island, Spain, on October 22.

    The Super Puma helicopter, carrying a captain, a lieutenant and sergeant, went down after taking off from Mauritania. Authorities said the chopper had been involved in military exercises in Dakar, Senegal and stopped at Mauritania for refueling.

    All 3 crew members went missing after the crash. A search operation is underway.

    The cause of crash is being investigated.
