Why:Pilot who flew into some overhead wires and crashed while while spraying blackberry farm, was trapped beneath the wrecked helicopter with a punctured lung, a broken arm and fuel burns. His condition is critical, and he is in intensive care in Hawke’s Bay Hospital
A CHC operated Eurocopter AS 332L2 Super Puma Mk2 with 18 aboard had taken off from the Borgsten Dolphin rig en route to Sumburgh Airport and suffered a “catastrophic loss of power” before it ditched 2 nm W off Sumburgh, Shetland Islands, Scotland.
Fourteen survivors were recovered. Four fatalities were reported: Duncan Munro, 46, from Bishop Auckland, Sarah Darnley, 45, from Elgin, Gary McCrossan, 59, from Inverness, and George Allison, 57, from Winchester. Three of the four bodies have been recovered.
The survivors were hospitalized at Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick. Nine were detained at the hospital for exposure.
Rescue services included a ferry, a cargo ship, lifeboat crews from Lerwick and Aith, coastguard helicopters, RAF Lossiemouth and two Bond rescue helicopters.
CHC works for Total transporting rig workers.
The cause of the crash has not been determined. Pumas have been grounded due to safety concerns.
A Cochise Air helicopter, used by Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, crashed near Benson, southern Arizona, on the night of December 31.
The accident happened when the helicopter was returning from Phoenix to Sierra Vista airport, after maintenance.
Spokesperson of Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, Carol A. Capas, confirmed that both people aboard the aircraft were killed in the crash. They were identified as the pilot Carol A. Capas, who was a retired police officer, and the mechanic Marc Hansen, 51.
The cause of accident is under investigation.
A two-seater Xenon Gyroplane crashed into a river near Loma in western Colorado, shortly after 6 p.m. on October 4.
The yellow colored helicopter went down after it took off from the Grand Junction Airport with 2 people aboard.
Mesa County chief deputy coroner Victor Yahn confirmed that both people aboard the helicopter died in the crash. They were identified as Mark Shook, 61, of Peyton, Colorado, and Rebecca Jane Molle, 50, of Grand Junction, Colorado.
The FAA and the NTSB are investigating the cause of crash.

A Fishtail Air helicopter with six aboard crashed in Nepal 250 miles nw of Katmandu.
The helicopter crashed for unknown reasons in rainy and foggy conditions at 4:25 pm. It was enroute from Hilsa, near the China border.
One passenger died in the crash, and four were injured, including the Italian pilot and Nepali co-pilot. The injured were taken by medical helicopter to hospitals near Muchu village.
A crop dusting aircraft crashed in a wooded area near Hancock, Waushara County, Wisconsin, on August 26.
The Weatherly 620B single-engine aircraft was spraying a potato farm when it crashed.
The pilot, who was the only one aboard, was killed the spot. His identity has not yet been released.
The FAA and the NTSB are investigating.

Where: Kauai, Hawaii

Who: four fatalities, 3 injuries
Why: As a tour was ending, after experiencing hydraulic problems, a helicopter crashed at the the northwest end of Princeville airport a hundred yards from the terminal. A description of the wreckage indicated that the front of the helicopter was torn off, the tail was snapped off, and the rotors were broken. First responders attempted to save the four fatalities.
The pilot who had 10,000 hours on that helicopter died in the crash.
Four injured were taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. One died en route.

Where: North shore of Kauai, Hawaii
When: 1:05 pm
Who: five aboard, one fatality, four injuries.
Why: The pilot heard a loud bang, and lost control of the helicopter, which fell down in a spiral formation on to a Hanalei campsite
The debris field is spread from the ocean to the beach. A dive team will be searching the ocean for the tail rotor, gear box and drive shaft which were flung afield. Witnesses extricated survivors out of the wreckage
