    Spain: Helimer 207 Crashes in Sea

    What: “Salvamento Marítimo (Helisureste)” Agusta Westland AW.139 in a training mission out of LEAM (Almeria Airport, Spain)
    Where: In sea 4 nm of Almeria airport
    When: Jan 21, 2010
    Who: 3 fatalities, one severe injury
    Why: The marine search and rescue helicopter fell into the sea off Almería 4 miles from the runway. They were on approach to the airport and returning from aerial maneuvers with Névola (ship). Only one person was rescued, and he was in serious condition. Rescue services included four helicopters, two boats and a tugboat, as well as member of Marine Rescue, Civil Guard.

    Those who died were Commander Jose Luis Lopez Alcala, of Granada; copilot Kevin Holmes of New Zealand/Granada; and Iñigo Vallejo Garcia,of Seville.

    Suffering from hypothermia, rescued craneman Alberto Elvira Vallejo was taken to Torrecárdenas Hospital.

    Russian Helicopter Crashed in Murmansk: 16 out of 18 Dead

    A Mi-8 helicopter crashed on June 1 into a lake in Murmansk region of northern Russia.

    According to the authorities, the helicopter was carrying 18 people, including 13 passengers and 5 crew members. The passengers of the ill-fated helicopter included top officials of renowned fertilizer manufacturer, Apatite.

    Sixteen people were killed in the accident while two were rescued in an injured state. Those who survived were taken to the hospital.

    Apatit’s parent company, PhosAgro, has issued a list containing names of passengers and crew members aboard the helicopter.

    The cause of the crash is being investigated.

    1 Killed, 3 Injured as Helicopter Crashes in Indonesia

    A Bell 206 helicopter crashed in Paniai district of Papua Province, Indonesia, on June 4th.

    The aircraft went down when it was transporting three passengers from Nabire to a mining site in Degewo.

    The pilot was killed in the crash while the passengers were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Spokesperson of Indonesia’s national police Agus Rianto said, “We have evacuated the passengers to the nearby city of Nabire so they could get medical treatment.”

    The cause of crash is being investigated.

    Edelsten Crashes Helicopter

    When: Dec 15, 2009, 10am
    Who: pilot
    Why: Pilot Geoffrey Edelsten was on his first solo, when the helicopter yawed quite violently to the left, to the right and into the ground. He sustained minor cuts.

    Lost: Thai Search And Rescue

    What: Thai military Black Hawk chopper
    Where: Myanmar border
    When: July 18, 2011
    Who: 9 aboard
    Why: The chopper was on a search and rescue mission looking for 5 bodies in Saturday’s chopper crash in Krachan National park.

    Those aboard the chopper were On board were Major General Tawan Ruangsri, the 9th Infantry Division chief and commander of the Surasee Task Force, Major Prapan Jiamsoongnoen, the 1st pilot, Major Chuphan Polwan, the 2nd pilot, Sargent Major Somkid Wongtoksaeng, the senior flight mechanic, Sargent Aram Wongsing, the second mechanic, Captain Jate Sudchai, Captain Chakraphan Bamrungphuet, Lance Corporal Itthisak Hinasuthi, and Sornwichai Kongtannukul, a TV Channel 5 cameraman.

    While the chopper was en route, weather turned bad, and two of the three choppers on the mission returned to base. The third chopper was reported missing. Radio contact was lost at 11:55 a m.
