Pakistan International Airlines flight 711 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Shannon, County Clare, Ireland, on April 23rd.
The Boeing 777-200, flying from Manchester, England, to New York, was mid-air above Northern Ireland when it was diverted in emergency due to smoke in the cockpit.
The plane landed uneventfully.
All passengers and crew members onboard remained unharmed.

What: Swiss Airlines Airbus A340-300 en route from Zurich Switzerland to Tokyo
Where: Tokyo
When: Jan 7th 2009
Who: 227 passengers
Why: On landing at Narita, the plane’s left gear began smoking, which engaged emergency services. Hydraulics were leaking from the top of the gear strut. Timely repairs were made so that the plane was able to make its return flight.

Where: Ataturk Airport (Istanbul)

Who: 223 passengers
Why: The plane had an undisclosed problem and returned to the airport where it landed safely.

What: 1947 Stinson 10A en route from Mason City, Iowa, to Boone, North Carolina
Where: four miles west of London in the median of KY 80
When: 3 p.m. Wednesday October 7
Who: 62-year-old pilot Wayne Alsworth, of Sterling, Alaska
Why: The landing was due to running low on fuel. Fuel was procured for the pilot, who was able to then take off and go to the nearest airport to fill his tank.
TAAG Angola Airlines flight DT-747 suffered a bird strike near Sao Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport, Brazil, on January 6th.
The incident happened when the Boeing 777-300 plane flying from Luanda, Angola, was on approach to Sao Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport.
The plane continued for a safe landing. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

What: British Airways Boeing 747-400 en route from Hong Kong to London
Where: Copenhagen
When: Jul 30th 2010
Why: While en route over Russia, the plane developed engine problems and had to shut down. The crew decided to continue instead of return to Hong Kong, and diverted to Copenhagen where they made a safe landing. The plane spent some thirty plus hours on the ground and on the return to the UK has not yet been returned to service.
The report of the UK’s Air Accident Investigation said windmilling of the engine without engine oil supply over an extended period of time increased engine damage and recommended that regulators review engine shut down policy.
Air France flight AF-457 made an emergency landing in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on December 10th.
The Boeing 777-300 plane took off for Charles de Gaulle Airport, France, but had to turn back due to issues with the speed indicators, autopilot and auto thrust.
The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
