    Emergency Landing: Iran Contention with ATC

    What: Orenburg Airlines Boeing 737 en route from Perm to Dubai
    Where: Iran
    When: January 3, 2009
    Who: not available
    Why: While en route, the crew developed an issue with air traffic control in Dubai which forced an emergency landing in Iran. According to news reports, “The passengers have been given water, and an external air conditioner has been hooked up. In the near future, the aircraft should fly to Dubai.”

    The statement sounds as if the passengers and crew are being held aboard the aircraft.

    There was apparently no mechanical reason for the diversion.

    Biplane Crashed during Thunder Over Solano Air Show in California; Pilot Killed

    biplaneA 1944 Stearman biplane crashed on a runway at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California.

    The incident happened at about 2 p.m on May 4 during the Thunder Over Solano air show, when the pilot was performing an acrobatic aerial maneuver very close to the ground. The specific stunt is known as “cutting a ribbon” where the plane is flown close to ground in inverted position and a knife from the plane is thrown to cut a ribbon, just off the ground.

    Air force officials have identified the pilot as 77 year old Edward Andreini, belonging to Half Moon Bay. According to the FAA records, Andreini owned the 1944 Boeing E75 Super Stearman.

    FAA and NTSB officials are investigating the accident.

    Athens: Emergency Landing

    What: Daallo/Astraeus Boeing 757-200 en route from Paris to Djibouti
    Where: Athens
    When: Sep 17th 2009
    Who: 80 passengers and crew
    Why: When the oil pressure in engine 2 dropped, the flight diverted to Athens where it landed safely. Passengers debarked and were provided alternative transportation

    Bird-Hit Tui fly Flight Makes Safe Landing in Portugal

    Tui fly flight X3-2806 made a safe landing after a bird strike near Funchal, Portugal, on September 12th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Frankfurt, Germany, was on final approach to Funchal when a bird hit it.

    The plane continued for a safe landing. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    LOT Polish Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Warsaw

    LOT Polish Airlines flight LO-522 made an emergency landing in Warsaw, Poland, on September 25th.

    The Embraer ERJ-175 plane flying from Prague, Czech Republic, was descending toward Warsaw when the crew received indication of a possible issue with the brakes, and declared an emergency.

    The plane landed safely. All eighty-two people aboard remained unharmed.

    Southwest Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Lubbock

    Southwest Airlines flight WN-55 made an emergency landing in Lubbock, Texas, on August 28th.

    The Boeing 737-700 plane heading from Phoenix, Arizona, to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was diverted due to engine vibrations.

    The plane landed safely. All one hundred and four people aboard remained unharmed.
