A twin-engine Cessna Citation Jet CJ1 owned by Donald L. Baker and his wife Dawn Hunter, crashed near Cedar Fort, Utah. Witnesses saw the airplane on fire and coming to pieces, and heard an explosion. The plane was due at Tucson but never arrived. Two unidentified bodies were recovered from a large debris field a mile long and a quarter mile wide. Snow and fog have been hampering recovery efforts. The names of the victims will be confirmed before they are released. FAA spokesman Allen Kenitze said the Cessna 525 “crashed under unknown circumstances.”

Utility Crew Perish in Cable Connection
The DBS Helicopters Bell 206L-3 LongRanger III helicopter in Silt, Colorado, that got tangled in power cables doing Holy Cross Energy powerline inspections crashed, killing the pilot and crew.
The accident occurred at 11:20 a.m. where the shared Holy Cross and Xcel Energy power lines cross Dry Hollow Road about 1.6 miles south of Silt. There were witnesses who saw the accident and attempted to help.
The poles that were being inspected were fifty feet high, and the helicopter was supposed to be flying thirty feet over that.
The small fifty-foot debris field is on rough hilly terrain.
Owner and chief pilot for DBS Helicopters, Doug Sheffer died in the accident. He had 22 years and 8,000 hours of flight time. Larry Shaffer who worked for Holy Cross Energy and Christopher Gaskill who worked for HotShot Infrared Inspections were also fatalities. They were filming the trouble spots along the route, and recording the locations on GPS.
I do not want to diminish the tragedy of this accident by saying that helicopter accidents such as this are common, but I will say they happen too frequently, even when the pilot has significant experience flying in mountain terrain, and rescue.
Two Killed after Small Plane Crashes in Texas
A single-engine plane crashed immediately after take off from Elmdale Airpark in Abilene, Texas, on March 1st.
Authorities said the two-seater Vans RV-6 experimental aircraft went down near the end of the runway.
There were two people aboard at the time; Both of them were killed in the crash. They were identified as James Estol Hathcock, 63, and Aaron T. Taylor, 33, both of Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
The cause of crash is being investigated.
RaceCar Driver Survives Florida Plane Crash

Why: After takeoff, the plane lost an engine and came down in a forested area about two miles from the airport. The pilot was able to contact the tower although he suffered several broken facial bones and a back injury.

Who: 9 crew members, 61 passengers died
Why: On October 2, 1996, Aeroperú Boeing 757 en route from Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, Peru (LIM), to Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago, Chile, crashed on October 2, 1996. Shortly after takeoff the crew discovered that their instrumentation was behaving erratically. They were receiving contradictory serial emergency messages from the onboard computer, such as rudder ratio, mach speed trim, overspeed, underspeed and flying too low. The crew declared an emergency and requested an immediate return to the airport. they experienced multiple stalls resulting in rapid loss of altitude with no corresponding altimeter changes. While the altimeter indicated an altitude of approximately 9,700 feet, but the aircraft’s true altitude was much closer to the water.
The air traffic controller sent a Boeing 707 to help guide the 757 to land, but before the 707 reached them, the 757’s wingtip struck the water approximately twenty-five minutes after emergency declaration. The pilots realized the true altitude of the airliner, struggled and was briefly airborne again for twenty seconds, but then crashed inverted into the water. All nine crew members and sixty-one passengers died.
In Peru, Eleuterio Chacaliaza was sentenced to negligent homicide for a piece of masking tape accidentally left over the static ports (on the bottom side of the fuselage) after cleaning the aircraft.

Hog Hunters Flipped in Chopper Bang-Up
At 9 a m Jan 26,2013, a Hiller UH-12B helicopter crashed east of the St. Lucie-Okeechobee County line in a swamp between Okeechobee Road and Orange Avenue, west of the Adams Ranch The three men aboard,Pilot William Harward, and passengers Jonathan Strayer, 46, and Massad Ayoob, 64 were hospitalized at Raulerson Memorial Hospital.
The helicopter had been chartered to “shoot feral hogs from a helicopter with .44 Magnum revolvers” a pastime that has been called pest eradication. A blog has released that the main rotor hit treetops, and the helicopter ended up upside down.

What: Cheyenne Sales & Leasing Piper PA-31T2 Cheyenne IIXL en route from Traverse City, Michigan to Tiffin Ohio
Where: near Clare County Airport
When: DEC 4, 2009, 6:45 p.m.
Who: Pilot
Why: While en route, the flight crashed in Claire county woods.
Witnesses reported the plane out of control but it is not noted if it burst into flames before or after impact. The wreckage was found at 7:21 p.m, a thirty minutes hike into the heavily wooded area north of M-61 and east of Highway 127.
One fatality was reported.
