    What: Cargo Air Lines Boeing 747-200 en route from New York to Liege Belgium
    Where: Gander Canada
    When: Jan 17th 2010
    Why: While en route, the plane noticed an oil pressure problem developing and shut down the afflicted engine. The plane dropped to a lower altitude and returned to JFK where it landed safely. * A cargo flight, no passengers involved.

  • Nevada Emergency landing

    What: small plane
    Where: dirt road near Lemmon and Chickadee drives between Spanish Springs and Lemmon Valley on a dirt road west of Reno-Sparks Indian Colony in Hungry Valley.
    When: 3 p.m. Friday
    Who: Washoe County Search and Rescue pilot Don Osborne
    Why: The plane experienced a sudden drop in oil pressure and made an emergency landing two miles from Reno Stead Airport. The pilot was off-duty.

    SriLankan Airlines Plane Returns to Bangkok due to Smoke in Cabin

    Srilankan airlinesSriLankan Airlines flight UL-891 had to return and make an emergency landing in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 7th.

    The plane took off for Colombo, Sri Lanka, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew reported smoke in the cabin.

    The Airbus A330-200 plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unhurt.

    A380 Emergency Landing at Shamshabad

    What: Emirates A380 en route from Bangkok to Dubai
    Where: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad
    When: October 23, 2011, 3:40 a.m.
    Who: 481 passengers
    Why: While en route, the plane developed problems. Pilots planned to land in Chennai but could not get clearance, and diverted instead to Shamshabad, where they were able to be cleared to land.

    The flight did land safely. The passengers disembarked with no reported injuries, and were provided a plane to take them the rest of the way to Dubai. Some took alternative flights.

    Boeing Depressurizes over Moscow

    What: Yakutia Airlines Boeing 757 en route from Vnukovo airport to Yakutsk.
    Where: Vnukovo airport in the Russian capital of Moscow
    When: Apr 7th 2009
    Who: 174 passengers and nine crew members
    Why: After takeoff, the pilot experienced technical problems. The cabin depressurized; and the pilot decided to return to the airport of origin to land; however, before landing, the plane circled the airport for three and a half hours to burn off excess fuel.

    Air New Zealand Plane Returns to Auckland due to Hydraulic Leak

    Air New ZealandAir New Zealand flight NZ-296 had to return and make an emergency landing in Auckland, New Zealand, on August 20th.

    The Boeing 777-200 plane took off for Apia, Samoa, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew suspected a hydraulic leak.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All 293 people aboard remained safe.
