    What: Continental Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Newark to Lisbon
    Where: west of the Azores
    When: Feb 27th 2010
    Why: While en route, after experiencing unreliable airspeed and losing communication (briefly), the flight again made radio contact and diverted to Lajes on Terceira Island. With partial avionic functions, and no autopilot, they made a safe landing.

    Student Pilot in Palo Alto Lesson Scare

    What: single engine Beechcraft Musketeer on student flight
    Where: East Palo Alto’s Ravenswood Open Space Preserve
    When: 08/23/2011, 9:30 am
    Who: instructor and student pilot
    Why: While practicing touch and go maneuvers at Palo Alto Airport, the plane’s engine failed.

    When the engine failed, the plane went down in the Ravenswood Open Space Preserve. A plane crashed there in Feb of 2010, which shook the neighborhood, but many locals were unaware of when this incident happened. This was an emergency landing, although the plane went off course after glancing against a tree.

    Both Instructor Jassen Todorov and student pilot David Shoemaker survived.

    Lufthansa Flight Returns to Munich due to Battery Issue

    Lufthansa flight LH-762 had to return and make an emergency landing in Munich, Germany, on December 9th.

    The Airbus A350-900 plane took off for Delhi, India, but had to turn back after one of the batteries failed.

    The plane landed back safely. All two hundred and sixty-eight people aboard remained unharmed.

    United Airlines Flight Diverts to Shannon Airport due to Medical Emergency

    United Airlines flight UA-879 made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Ireland, on January 12th.

    The plane heading from Heathrow Airport, England, to Houston, Texas, was diverted after a passenger suffered a medical emergency.

    The plane landed safely. The patient was taken to a hospital.

    Smoke Gets In Your Eyes … in AA Boeing 767 over Nova Scotia

    What: American Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from New York JFK airport to Switzerland
    Where: Halifax Nova Scotia
    When: June 9 2009 Tuesday night 8:20 p.m (45 minutes after takeoff)
    Who: 206 on board: 194 passengers and 12 crew
    Why: After takeoff, smoke was detected in the cabin. The flight requested an emergency landing in Halifax. The cause of the smoke was determined to be an electrical fire in the plane’s bathroom ceiling fan which had caught fire after overheating

    A replacement jet was arranged to take the passengers to Zurich.

    Austrian Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Zurich

    Austrian Airlines flight LX-1175 made an emergency landing in Zurich, Switzerland, on April 25th.

    The plane flying from Stuttgart, Germany, was descending toward Zurich when the crew noticed an issue with one of the engines and decided to shut it down.

    The plane continued for a safe landing. All sixty passengers aboard remained unharmed.
