What: Avid Catalina home-built, single-engine amphibious aircraft taking off from the lake near Camp Longhorn.
Where: Inks Lake in Burnet County

Why: The plane’s wing tip skimmed the water, sending the plane into a cartwheel. The pilot appeared outside of the plane but did not make it ashore. It was several days before the pilot was found.
United Airlines flight UA-840 had to return and make an emergency landing at Sydney Airport, Australia, on July 4.
The Boeing 787-900, en-route to Los Angeles, California, had to return after a couple of birds hit one of its engines.
The plane landed safely.
No one was injured.
Qantas flight QF2 had to divert and make an unscheduled landing at Perth International airport, Western Australia, on August 31.
According to the airline, “While travelling to Sydney from Dubai, the pilots received an indication that there was a technical issue with the aircraft so they diverted to Perth to have the issue repaired by our engineering team before continuing on to Sydney…There was a technical issue with one of the fuel pumps. There was no emergency landing.”
The 484-seater A380 jet landed safely and everyone aboard remained unhurt.
Qantas flight QF-2179 suffered a bat strike near Coffs Harbour Airport, Australia, on November 24th.
The plane flying from Port Macquarie, Australia, was on final approach to Coffs Harbour Airport when a bat hit it.
The plane continued for a safe landing. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
Jetstar Airways flight JQ-956 made an emergency landing in Brisbane, Australia, on September 22nd.
The Airbus A320-200 plane flying from Sydney to Cairns, Australia, was diverted after one of the engines developed a technical problem.
The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unhurt.
The Australian aviation authority, Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is in the process of investigating Hempel’s Aviation. Barry Hempel was killed recently while flying a passenger in a stunt plane. Hempel had no commercial pilot’s license and wasn’t qualified to pilot paying customers. The CASA is actively looking for people who purchased flights from the now-liquidated company in the past year.
