Unlicensed Pilots

The Australian aviation authority, Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is in the process of investigating Hempel’s Aviation. Barry Hempel was killed recently while flying a passenger in a stunt plane. Hempel had no commercial pilot’s license and wasn’t qualified to pilot paying customers. The CASA is actively looking for people who purchased flights from the now-liquidated company in the past year. Anyone who has information that may help CASA’s investigation should call: 07 3144 7532.

    Delta Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Sydney

    250px-Delta_logo.svgDelta Airlines flight DL-41 had to make an emergency landing in Sydney, Australia, on October 1st.

    The plane was flying from Los Angeles, California, when the crew declared an emergency due to hydraulic problems.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    Qantas Near Miss over Darwin Under ATSB Investigation

    What: Qantas Boeing 737-800 en route from Darwin to Melbourne
    What: Qantas Boeing 717 arriving en route from Alice Springs to Darwin
    Where: Darwin
    When: Oct 2, 2012
    Who: (up to) 295 aboard
    Why: Two Qantas flights came to within 250 metres of each other over Darwin were caught not by the human ATC, but only by the traffic collision avoidance system on board the plane from Alice Springs. The system reported the other plane was 247 metres below.

    An investigation is currently underway to determine if the Darwin a defence air traffic controller sent the jets on a collision course.

    The Qantas-badged 717 was operated by Cobham, a flight contractor.

    Helicopter Crash Lawsuit Filed

    A wrongful death suit has been filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court seeking $8 million on behalf of Shawn Blazer, one of nine men killed in a helicopter crash on Aug. 5. The helicopter crashed right after take-off as it was transporting crews battling Northern California wildfires at Trinity Alps Wilderness. Two other suits, each seeking $10 million were filed on behalf of Matthew Hammer and Bryan Rich. Negligence and design flaws are among the allegations.

    Additional negligence and liability suits are anticipated.

    Emergency Landing: Boeing Cracked Windshield in Adelaide


    What: Virgin Blue Boeing 737 Flight DJ289 en route from Melbourne bound for Perth
    Where: Emergency landing in Adelaide
    When: Saturday
    Why: A cracked windshield was the reason for the emergency landing, but passengers–although uninjured– are apparently upset that they were not informed about the situation as it happened.

    Qantas Boeing Diverts to Rockhampton

    A Qantas Boeing 737-800 en route from Brisbane to Townsville made an emergency landing in Rockhampton. Emergency fire crews were on standby.

    Passengers noted turbulence. After the pilot informed passengers of technical difficulties, air masks descended. The pilots descended to a safe altitude prior to landing.

    Online reports indicate the cabin was losing pressure.

    An alternative flight was provided to take passengers to Townsville.

    Ultralight Crashes in Australia Flood Zone

    What: ultralight
    Where: Toobeah near Goondiwindi, Australia
    When: Jan 18 2010, 2.45pm
    Who: pilot
    Why: Near the border of Queensland and New South Wales, the helicopter struck powerlines and crashed. The area is affected by flooding and difficult to access by emergency services but Queensland Fire and Rescue crews (Four fire units, comprising 16 firefighters) are en route to the location at t Donovans Road, south of the Barwon Highway. The 65 year old pilot has been reported as a fatality.
