Helicopter Crash Lawsuit Filed

A wrongful death suit has been filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court seeking $8 million on behalf of Shawn Blazer, one of nine men killed in a helicopter crash on Aug. 5. The helicopter crashed right after take-off as it was transporting crews battling Northern California wildfires at Trinity Alps Wilderness. Two other suits, each seeking $10 million were filed on behalf of Matthew Hammer and Bryan Rich. Negligence and design flaws are among the allegations.

Additional negligence and liability suits are anticipated.

    Ohio National Guard Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing in Tuscarawas Township, Ohio

    An Ohio National Guard Black Hawk helicopter made an emergency landing in a field in Tuscarawas Township, Stark County, Ohio, on March 23rd.

    The aircraft was en-route from Akron-Canton Airport to Columbus, Ohio, when it had to make an emergency landing in a rye field.

    It is believed that the aircraft had experienced a transmission problem.

    No injuries were reported.

    Helicopter Crashes in Indonesia with 27 aboard


    What: Nyaman Air Mil Mi-8MTV
    Where: Tembagapura, Mimika, Papua Indonesia
    When: Oct 9, 2012
    Who: 27 aboard
    Why: The chopper made a hard landing near mile 66. Twenty four or five passengers (18 Indonesians and seven citizens of other countries) and three crew survived the landing, though the helicopter sustained damage.

    There were no fatalities, but the number of those aboard has been reported from 27 to 29 with either 2 or 3 crew, and 24 or 25 passengers.

    US PT Freeport Indonesia evacuated the passengers who were hospitalized briefly with minor injuries.

    A Russian news report said that two of the pilots were Russians.

    Right after takeoff, the flight lost altitude and struck a tree.

    Spanair Update

    Madrid Superior Court Judge Juan Javier Perez is questioning three mechanics in relation to the Spanair plane crash. The purpose of the inquisition is to decide if there is a question of criminal accountability (manslaughter) for mistakes that lead to air disasters. To date, the only problem pinned down on the plane is with the plane’s wing flaps and the failure of a cockpit alarm.

    The plane’s take-off warning system is supposed to be checked before every flight; it is supposed to warn pilots when planes properly configured for takeoff. Legally, the system is looking for someone to blame. However, some believe that getting caught up in blame clouds the larger issue of developing safety checks and balances.

    Indian Air Force Chopper Makes Precautionary Landing in Mumbai

    An Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter made an emergency landing at Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, India, on the afternoon of October 21.

    The MI-17 chopper was on a routine training sortie when it had to make a precautionary landing after developing a technical snag.

    The aircraft landed uneventfully.

    All 4 passengers aboard remained safe.

    Medevac Disaster

    What: Medical evacuation helicopter en route from Ponte Lettia heliport in Upper Corsica
    Where: on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica in the mountainous area near the city of Bastia. The helicopter “brutally” flew into a mountain in poor weather.
    When: Sun Apr 26, 2009
    Who: Five people: two pilots, a medic and two patients
    Why: In spite of bad weather (fog, wind and rain), there was no distress signal. The medical team hadn’t realized how close to delivery the mother was; the helicopter was en route to the hospital as the Frenchwoman was giving birth. Mother and newborn perished in the crash along with everyone aboard. A rescue team of 150 found the wreckage.

    Squirrel Crash Kills Aussie Pilot

    What: Eurocopter AS 350B2 Ecureuil
    Where: 36km south of Manus Island, Papua New Guinea
    When: Feb 13, 2011
    Who: Pilot Mal Smith
    Why: While flying from the Eastern Highlands centre of Goroka to Manus for mining contractors, Australian Sunshine Coast helicopter pilot Lloyd Lester suffered engine failure in a Eurocopter AS350 P2-PHL Ecureuil, and crashed into the Bismarck sea en route to Manus Island. Eyewitnesses report indicate that the engine lost power, started up and lost power again.

    Pacific Helicopters owner, Mal Smith (who is also Eastern Highlands Province governor) said some of the wreckage was found, but not the engine or Mr Lester. He was hopeful he would be found alive, but three helicopters and two planes searched an area 24 kilometres to the west and 70 kilometres to south of Baluan Island and Mr Lester was not found. Nearby islands are being searched in case he made it to shore.
