Why: Two Peruvian crew members and 12 passengers (mostly Korean) went missing in a high Andes region of cloudy mountaintops in Hualla Hualla. The tourists included two Austrians and the rest were South Koreans. The passenger list was published:

Guatemala: Chopper Crash

Ex army officer Ramón Rodríguez Toledo, and his passengers Luis Paiz and Andrés Berger were aboard a Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter that crashed in a coffee plantation in Guatemala between Villa Canales and Fraijanes.

Andrés Berger was the copilot.

The flight took off at 17:48 on Monday but lost communication with ATC shortly afterward. Residents near the impact zone heard an explosion at 18:00 hours.

A friend of the pilot said he had 15,000 hours in the cockpit.

The accident is under investigation.

Pacific Aerospace 750XL lost in Papua Indonesia

What: Pacific Aerospace 750XL
Where: Papua
When: Oct 3, 2012
Who: 2 aboard
Why: A small Pacific Aerospace 750XL carrying two people between two villages in the remote district of Yahukimo was reported missing. The plane’s emergency transmitters have been detected. A rescue team has begun a search operation to find the pilot and passenger.

United Airlines Flight Overruns Runway at Green Bay-Austin Straubel International Airport

United Airlines flight UA-878 overran the end of the runway during landing at Green Bay-Austin Straubel International Airport, Wisconsin, on February 23rd.

The Boeing 737-900 plane, flying from Madison, Wisconsin, was originally scheduled for Minneapolis, Minnesota. However, the pilots decided to divert to Green Bay due to bad weather in Minneapolis.

The plane came to stop about 250 feet off the runway.

All one hundred eighty passengers and seven crew members remained uninjured.

Onur Airbus Escorted Over Germany

What: Onur Air Airbus A321-200 en route from Manchester to Cyprus
Where: Germany
When: Aug 20 2011
Why: The airbus was a source of concern when it lost communication for a quarter of an hour while over Germany, during which time a sonic boom was heard.

The two fighter jet “escorts” were the probable source of the sonic boom which disturbed residents’ peace of mind.

Communications were restored and the flight continued to Cyprus as scheduled.

€10,000 Awarded for Child Trauma


Two year old Emma Reddan witnessed a Sikorsky S76 piloted by Bill Curry crashing in the Neptune Hotel car lot. The chopper’s rotor blade struck a lamp post, resulting in the crash.

Emma Reddan suffered from separation anxiety disorder.

In Civil court, Judge Matthew Deery approved a €10,000 settlement for Emma Reddan from Curry and GP Helicopter Services Ltd, of Woodstown Dale, Knocklyon, Dublin, and Barrack Construction Limited, Thomastown, Caragh, Naas, Co Kildare.

Swiftair Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Shannon Airport

swiftairSwiftair flight QY-2939 had to return and make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Ireland, on November 17th.

The cargo plane had just departed for Leipzig, Germany, when the crew reported that they had lost all instruments and declared an emergency.

The crew were able to re-gain most of the instruments before the plane landed back safely.

Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
