    Trans State Plane’s Wing Tips Strike Whilst Landing

    Trans State flight AX-4615/UA-4615 made a safe landing at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, Saint Louis, Missouri, on February 23.

    The Embraer, en-route from Chicago, Illinois, to Saint Louis, struck the wing tips onto the runway while landing.

    The plane received minor damage to its wings.

    All people aboard remained unharmed.

    JetBlue Flight Returns to Salt Lake City After Bird Strike

    JetBlue flight B6-531 had to return and make an emergency landing in Salt Lake City, Utah, on October 31st.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane took off for Long Beach, California, but had to turn back due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

  • Flightsmanship Averts Disaster in Commemorative Flight


    What: Commemorative Air Force T6 Texan modified to resemble a Nakajima B5N2 “KATE” Torpedo Bomber, a type of aircraft that “devastated Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.” The replica is part of the Central Texas wing from the San Marcos Municipal Airport. The replica had taken off from an air show at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. The plane was being returned to the San Marcos Airport from which it is based.

    Who: Pilot Pat McClure of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) and passenger
    Why: Airport manager is quoted as saying “There could not have been a better outcome to this emergency, and I’d be putting the former Naval Aviator in for the Air Medal if we were still in the Navy. It was superb airmanship.”

    The pilot landed the plane on the right main landing gear, holding the left wing off the runway until the plane’s speed had slowed. The problem was with the left wing gear which would not lock.

    TAP Portugal Airlines Flight Returns to Sao Paulo after Bird Strike

    TAPTAP Portugal Airlines flight TP-82 made an emergency landing in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on October 21st.

    The Airbus A330-200 plane took off for Lisbon, Portugal, but had to turn back after a bird impacted its left engine.

    The plane landed safely after burning off excess fuel. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.

    Air Canada Jazz Suffers Engine Fire Just After Takeoff

    On December 12, 2013, an Air Canada Jazz de Havilland Canada DHC-8-311 took off from Nanaimo Airport en route to Vancouver when the plane developed an engine fire.

    Fire broke out over open water when the plane reached cruising altitude minutes after leaving the airport. Passengers reported hearing a loud bang, and on the side of the plane, they saw flames from the affected engine.

    The pilot shut down the engine, and they made a safe landing. The crew also discovered an engine oil problem just prior to the fire.

    This was the first emergency landing at the Nanaimo Airport, which was shut down for four hours after the incident. Emergency services responded to the scene. Passengers used stairs to exit.

    Passengers spoke positively about the crew. No one was injured.

    Air Canada Flight Returns to Montreal due to Engine Trouble


    Air Canada flight AC017 had to return and make an emergency landing in Montreal, Canada, on March 25th.

    The plane took off for Shanghai, China, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew needed to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane landed back uneventfully. All 213 passengers aboard remained safe.
