    Pilot Killed as Helicopter Crashes in Saskatchewan

    A helicopter crashed in a field in Kinley, Saskatchewan, Canada, on October 27.

    Authorities said the aircraft went down while it was heading from Calgary to Saskatoon.

    The 48-year-old pilot, who was the only one aboard, was killed in the crash. His name has not yet been released.

    The cause of crash is being investigated.

    What: Senior Táxi Aéreo Agusta Westland AW139 from oil platform to Rio de Janeiro
    Where: in the Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro

    Why: On Friday afternoon, the chopper charted to Brazilian oil major Petrobras set out from the PetrobrasP-65 platform en route to Macaé.

    While miles from shore, the crew declared emergency, and went down 100 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Contact with the chopper was lost at 17:00 local time.

    A Bandeirante Patrol plane and two search Brazilian military aircraft, the 4th Squadron of the 7th Aviation Group, a H-34 Super Puma helicopter, and the 3rd Squadron of the 8th Aviation Group initiated a search for the downed Senior Táxi helicopter. In all, there were five aircraft, a helicopter and four ships, including a Guajará Navy patrol vessel and a Lynx helicopter on standby in the area.

    After two days of searching in rough seas, three bodies were found on the ocean floor 100 meters down and 62 miles from the coast. One body is still somewhere in the ocean.

    The fatalities are listed as Rommel Oliveira Garcia, pilot, Lauro Pinto Haytzann, co-pilot, both employees of Senior Air Taxis, and passengers Ricardo Leal de Oliveira from the company Engevix, and Joao Carlos Pereira da Silva, the Brasitest inspector.

    Helicopter Crash in Southern Russia Kills 4

    helicopterA privately owned helicopter crashed in the mountains of Apsheron district, in southern Russia, on the evening of June 28.

    The helicopter was carrying 4 people when it crashed; all of them were killed. The deceased have been identified as A.I. Goncharenko, 53, S.V. Yelugyan, 46, A.S. Yelugyan, 23, and E.B. Yelugyan, 13.

    Goncharenko was flying the helicopter at the time of accident.

    Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry statement said that the accident happened due to some technical fault.

    Foreign Dignitaries Killed as Military Helicopter Crashed in Pakistan

    A Military helicopter crashed into a school in Naltar, near Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, on May 8.

    The Mi-17 helicopter was transporting foreign dignitaries to the inauguration ceremony of a ski resort chairlift when it crashed and caught fire. Initial investigations reveal that the accident happened due to a mechanical fault in the helicopter.

    There were 17 people aboard the aircraft at the time of the crash. Authorities confirmed that seven of them, including the Norwegian envoy Leif H Larsen, the Philippines ambassador Domingo D Lucenario, the wives of the Indonesian and Malaysian envoys, 2 Pakistan Air Force pilots and one technician, were killed.

    Others, including the Dutch and Polish ambassadors, were injured and were airlifted to a local military hospital.

    Medical Evacuation Halted

    What: Memorial Star medical helicopter en route from accident scene to Memorial Hospital
    Where: Midland Elementary off Broadway Street just south of Highway 24, Colorado Spring

    Why: While transporting a 62 year old medical patient, the helicopter’s yellow caution light indicated the helicopter was experiencing mechanical problems. The crew decided to make a precautionary landing on an elementary school field.

    The patient was taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

    A mechanic looked over the helicopter. No problems were reported.

    Helicopter Crash in Mexico Kills 6

    What: Saba Group Helicopter en route from Toluca to Mexico City
    Where: Mina Vieja in Cuajimalpa, near La Marquesa
    When: Jan 10, 2010
    Who: Fatalities included Moises Saba Masri, 46, his father, Alberto Saba Raffoul, and Umberto Saba, also Capt. Armando Fernandez and Judith Casal and Yadel Toachi.
    Why: The helicopter crashed during foggy weather; the tail struck a residence at 85 Melchor Ocampo Street, and the blades struck a tree. Two vehicles were damaged but no one on the ground was injured.
