    ABC News Crew Missing over Australia

    What: Australian Broadcasting Corporation chopper
    Where: Lake Eyre, Australia

    Who: 3 staff
    Why: The Australian Broadcasting crew was en route in bad weather and lost contract with flight control around 7:30 pm on August 17 at 142km northeast of William Creek and 146km north-northeast of Marree. Lake Eyre was said to be clear at the time of the crash, with a few local showers. The crew had been on site for aerial photography and video work around Lake Eyre and Cooper Creek.

    They were supposed to be meeting people for dinner, and when they didn’t show up, according to The Telegraph, “the guys walked a few kilometres to the edge of Lake Eyre and found the wreckage.” Eyewitnesses saw the chopper go down in flames.

    The cause is unclear.

    The passengers included journalist Paul Lockyer and cameraman John Bean, who were confirmed missing last night and confirmed dead this morning at 5:30 am.

    Chopper pilot Gary Ticehurst, (Film Helicopters Australia) had over 14,000 chopper hours. Lockyer was a 39 year journalist and Bean had been with ABC over 22 years.

    Emergency services arrived at the crash site early today, August 18.

    Russian Helicopter Shot Down

    December 21, 2012 a Kogalymavia Mil Mi-8AMT cargo flight for UN forces was struck by friendly fire and all 5 aboard died in the crash near Likuangole in the Sudan.

    According to Ria Novosti, Russian law enforcement said the helicopter was a “Nizhnevartovskavia” Russian Mi-8 helicopter.

    The BBC said this was a peacekeeping mission and a clearly marked helicopter. The incident was reported as a case of “friendly fire.”

    The four crew members were Russian, and there was a non-Russian passenger. Everyone aboard perished in the crash and subsequent fire.

    Helicopter Crashes in Africa

    What: bright-orange helicopter
    Where: between the Carnival City Casino and the Rondebult offramp, (beside the road) Boksburg
    When: 10.30am
    Who: two injured were both men aged between 30 and 40.
    Why: The crash is under investigation. Witnesses say the helicopter “fell like a rock.”

    One was treated by ER24 and taken to Glynnwood Hospital in Benoni; the other suffered head injuries and was treated by paramedics; he was placed on advanced life support and ported to the Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton.

    Medical Evacuation Halted

    What: Memorial Star medical helicopter en route from accident scene to Memorial Hospital
    Where: Midland Elementary off Broadway Street just south of Highway 24, Colorado Spring
    When: Jan 28, 2010
    Who: patient and crew
    Why: While transporting a 62 year old medical patient, the helicopter’s yellow caution light indicated the helicopter was experiencing mechanical problems. The crew decided to make a precautionary landing on an elementary school field.

    The patient was taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

    A mechanic looked over the helicopter. No problems were reported.

    Helicopter Crashed in Illinois after Hitting Power Line; Pilot Injured

    A helicopter crash-landed in Atkinson, Henry County, Illinois, at around 5 P.M. on August 5.

    According to sources, the aircraft hit a power line, caught fire, and landed in a soy bean field.

    The pilot, who was the only person aboard, was pulled out of the burning helicopter by farm owner. He was airlifted to Peoria, Illinois, in serious condition.

    The NTSB and Illinois State Police were investigating the crash.

    Four Killed After Police Helicopter Crashes in Mexico

    A police helicopter crashed in the hills near Mexicali, in the state of Baja California, Mexico, on March 14th.

    The state police helicopter was on a mission to recover the body of a female hiker when it got tangled in power cables and went down.

    Four people were killed in the crash, including the pilot and the co-pilot.
