Why: A Robinson 22 helicopter used by “Golden Fly” for training flights made ??a forced landing on September 24. Although at first the Fire Department reported that the plane fell, the report was corrected to be listed as a hard landing. The Fire Department responded with four vehicles and the Military Police (MP) sent a chopper. The two crew members aboard suffered no injuries.

The bodies of Instructor Job de Oliveira, Jean Carlos Capelin (30, of São José do Rio Preto), Rodrigo Matos Gomes (27 of Recife ), and Diego Pereira da Costa (27 of Taguatinga) were identified today, and recovered.

Why: The rescue chopper vibrated itself apart after landing.“Ground resonance” occurs when a sitting helicopter’s rotors become unbalanced while spinning. A resident expert says this can happen because of a hard landing; the best way to get it to stop is to pull collective and break contact with the ground. (At the time, that would feel counter intuitive, I would think!)

Bird-Hit Southwest Airlines Flight Makes Safe Landing in Fort Lauderdale
Southwest Airlines flight WN-1495 made a safe landing following a bird strike in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on February 7th.The Boeing 737-700 plane flying from Dallas Love Field, Texas, was on final approach to Fort Lauderdale when one of the engines ingested a bird.
The plane continued for safe landing.
Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

Avianca Airlines Flight Encounters Severe Turbulence; 23 Injured
Avianca Airlines flight AV-965 had to make an emergency landing in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on June 4th.The Airbus A330-200 aircraft, flying from Lima, Peru, ran into severe turbulence that injured 23 people on-board.
The plane continued for a safe landing in Buenos Aires, where the injured were given medical aid. Authorities confirmed that 10 people were shifted to hospital for further treatment.
Firefighter Dies as Chopper Falls Apart

Why: Steve Titsworth, a retired (30 year) firefighter was flying the Robinson R22 chopper belonging to Don Arsenault when the chopper began falling apart. The propellers split and flew into the river; the rotor fell into the trees; and the rest of the chopper crashed hit a tree about 300 feet south of the river. The wreckage caught fire and was engulfed.The chopper had recently been overhauled.
