    LATAM Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Chile

    LATAM Airlines flight LA-841 had to return and make an emergency landing in Santiago, Chile, on January 19th.

    The Boeing 787-900 plane took off for Easter Island, Chile, but had to turn back due to issues with the cabin pressure.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    What: American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82 en route from Tampa to the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport
    Where: emergency landing in Tallahassee Florida
    When: Saturday Apr 25th 2009
    Who: 147 people
    Why: After discovering that the plane was experiencing mechanical problems involving the fuel tanks, it took twenty minutes to land. Passengers boarded a MD-83 and reached Dallas nine and a half hours later. The MD-82 with fuel system issues is under examination.

    NTSB Report Blames Clear Air Turbulence for United Airline Flight Injuries

    The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released the preliminary investigation report on the February 17 incident of United Airlines Flight 1676, flying from Denver-to-Billings, which suddenly started to jolt, injuring many passengers.

    According to the report, the airplane was in cruise flying mode at an altitude of 34,000 feet, when it ran into extreme clear air turbulence and resulted in several injuries. The report further elaborates that among 114 passengers and flight crew, 2 were seriously injured while 9 were hospitalized with minor injuries.

    The Boeing 737-700 was also damaged and was taken to United maintenance facility in Houston.

    Hail, Turbulence Downs Sicily Airbus

    What: Windjet Airbus A319-100 en route from Forli to Palermo
    Where: Catania Sicily
    When: Oct 1st 2009,

    Why: The pilot decided to divert to Catania because of severe weather conditions. On approach, the flight encountered wind shear of +50/-50 knots, severe turbulence and hail that signiicantly damaged the plane.

    Severe storms on Oct 1 in Sicily caused several deaths due to weather complications.

    Egypt Air Human Error=Wing Loss

    What: Egypt Air Airbus A330-200 en route from Cairo to Hurghada
    Where: Cairo
    When: Apr 2nd 2010
    Who: 195 passengers
    Why: Prior to take-off, there was crew error on the ground, and the plane impacted two runway light poles. The wings were damaged; the streetlights collapsed. Passengers were transferred to another plane.

    The damaged plane was judged to be a total loss.

    Plane Lands Sans One Engine at JFK

    What: Cargo Air Lines Boeing 747-200 en route from New York to Liege Belgium
    Where: Gander Canada
    When: Jan 17th 2010
    Why: While en route, the plane noticed an oil pressure problem developing and shut down the afflicted engine. The plane dropped to a lower altitude and returned to JFK where it landed safely. * A cargo flight, no passengers involved.
