    Virgin Atlantic Flight Diverts to Shannon Airport due to Cargo Smoke Indication

    Virgin Atlantic flight VS-34 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Ireland, on August 15th.

    The Airbus A330-200 plane heading from Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda, to Gatwick Airport, England, was diverted after the crew received a cargo smoke indication.

    The plane landed safely. All two hundred and eighty passengers and twelve crew members remained unharmed.

    Turbulence Injury over LA

    Why: While landing in Los Angeles, the flight encountered turbulence.

    The pilot made a safe landing, but one flight attendant was injured by turbulence.

    Tianjin Airlines Flight 7554


    Two hijackers died from injuries after six Uyghur men armed with aluminum crutches and explosives attempted to hijack Tianjin Airlines Embraer ERJ-190, registration B-3171. Six minutes after takeoff, they attempted to get into the cockpit. Passengers and crew overcame the hijackers who were dressed as Tianjin Airline staff. Thirteen were injured: seven passengers, two air marshal security officers. two flight attendants, two hijackers. The flight was scheduled from Hotan to Ürümqi in China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region. As a consequence of this attempted hijacking, security measures and airport security was beefed up.
    The separatist World Uyghur Congress claimed the incident did not happen and that the incident was an excuse to lock up Uyghurs.

    What: Jetblue Embraer ERJ-190 en route from Portland Long Beach CA
    Where: Long Beach
    When: Oct 26th 2009
    Who: Not available
    Why: On take-off (most likely) one of the jet’s tires blew out. Prior to landing, the flight verified that a tire was flat. The emergency landing was safe, with rescue standing by.

    What: American Eagle Embraer ERJ-145 en route from Montreal to Chicago O’Hare
    Where: Toronto
    When: May 13 2011
    Who: 49 passengers and 3 crew,
    Why: When an electrical odor was detected aboard the plane, the pilots diverted to Toronto where they made a safe landing. Passengers did not have to disembark using slides. There were no injuries.

    The source of the smell was an overheated fluorescent light

    KLM Flight Diverts to Nice due to Cargo Smoke Indication

    KLM flight KL-598 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Nice, France, on November 20th.

    The Boeing 777-300 plane heading from Cape Town, South Africa, to Amsterdam, Netherlands, was diverted due to a cargo smoke indication.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
