Why: The plane had taken off when systems indicated a technical problem.
Radio Vesti FM said that pilots diverted to Ekaterinburg where they made a safe landing. The departure from Ekaterinburg occurred seven hours later.

What: TAM Linhas Aereas Airbus A330-200, en route from Paris to Rio de Janeiro

Why: On takeoff, the plane developed a problem. The right engine was shut down. After suffering what sounded like a backfire to passengers, the captain announced they would be returning.
The flight crew then dumped fuel (apparently in the English Channel) and returned to the airport. Passengers were provided accommodations and were rescheduled.
American Airlines flight AA-10 made an emergency landing in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 2nd.
The Airbus A321-200 plane heading from Los Angeles, California, to John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, was diverted due to smoke in the cabin.
