    Who: 14 people on board
    Why: After the crew detected smoke in the cockpit right after takeoff, the Sky West flight was able to land safely.

    Jet Blue Nose Gear went Belly Up at JFK

    What: Jetblue Embraer ERJ-190 en route from Austin,TX to New York JFK,NY
    Where: JFK,NY runway 22L diverted to runway 31L
    When: May 7th 2009
    Who: 80 people on board
    Why: After a missed approach, the Jet Blue crew announced a “little issue.” THe little issue turned out to be a nose gear steering fault. The plane landed safely under emergency status; no one was injured. And the plane did require a tow after landing.

    This plane–unlike several others at the same time frame at JFK–did NOT incur a bird strike.

    Virgin Atlantic Plane Returns to London due to Hydraulic Failure

    Virgin AtlanticVirgin Atlantic flight VS-107 had to return and make an emergency landing at Heathrow Airport, London, England, on April 27th.

    The Airbus A330-300, en-route to Detroit, Michigan, was mid-air when it had to return after the crew reported hydraulic failure followed by a possible landing gear failure.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All passengers aboard remained safe.

    The passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

    Emergency Landing in Malta

    What: Smartlynx Airbus A320-200 en route from Tenerife to Antalya
    Where: Malta
    When: Oct 22 2010
    Why: While en route, the flight suffered a loss of cabin pressure. The pilot diverted to Malta where they made a safe landing. In less than 24 hours, the plane was en route again. Disposition of the passengers is unknown.

    Plane Crashes Mountain; 6 Fatalities

    What: Aviastar Mandiri British Aerospace BAe146-300 en route from Jayapura to Wamena Indonesia
    Where: Mount Pike
    When: Apr 9th 2009
    Who: 6 crew: captain, co-pilot, engineer, loadmaster and two flight attendants
    Why: The plane was approaching runway 15 at Wamena Airport in foggy conditions, turned and air traffic control lost contact. The controller observed smoke coming from side of Gunung Pike Mountain. When search crews went to the source of the smoke, there were no survivors.

    Reportedly, the plane had been carrying rice and flour and 9 tons of Aviation Turbine Fuel. The airport is surrounded by mountains.

    Yakutia Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Yakutsk

    Yakutia Airlines flight R3-438 made an emergency landing in Yakutsk, Russia, on March 28th.

    The plane was flying from Lensk, Russia, when the crew needed to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane continued for a safe landing. All thirty-eight passengers and four crew members remained unharmed.
