    What: Lufthansa Cityline Avro RJ-85 en route from Linz Austria to Frankfurt
    Where: Linz
    When: Nov 29th
    Who: 61 passengers and 4 crew
    Why: By the time the flight took off, there was smoke not only in the cockpit but also in the cabin. After the plane landed safely, one individual was treated for shock; otherwise there were no injuries reported. The cause of the smoke was not released.

    CRJ-200 Partial Gear Landing

    What: Delta /Atlantic Southeast Airlines 50-seat CRJ-200 Bombardier en route from Columbus to Atlanta
    Where: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
    When: June 11, 2009
    Who: 19 passengers and 3 crew
    Why: On approach to Atlanta, the left main gear failed to extend, in spite of extended efforts. After a partial gear landing, the plane ended up off runway 27 right. No one was reported to be injured.

    Engine Trouble Diverts South African Express to East London

    What: South African Express Canadair CRJ-200 en route from East London to Johannesburg
    Where: East London
    When: Dec 22nd 2009
    Who: 16 people on board
    Why: While en route, the plane experienced engine trouble. The pilot shut down the engine and returned to East London where it made a safe landing.

    United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in San Francisco

    United Airlines flight UA-888 had to return and make an emergency landing in San Francisco, California, on April 25th.

    The Boeing 747-400 plane took off for Beijing, China, but had to turn back after it lost the reduced vertical separation minima (RVSM) maintenance capability.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Iberia Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Bogota

    Iberia flight IB-6650 made an emergency landing in Bogota, Colombia, on January 17th.

    The Airbus A340-600 plane heading from Lima, Peru, to Madrid, Spain, was diverted after the crew needed to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane landed safely. All three hundred and sixty people aboard remained unharmed.

    LAX Conducts Plane Crash Drill to Test Emergency Response Time

    Los Angeles International Airport conducted a full-scale plane crash simulation on April 13th.

    The two-hour drill, which was conducted to test the emergency response time, used a Boeing 777 plane that crashed and caught fire in a debris field.

    Around 500 emergency personnel, including firefighters, participated in the exercise, while 150 volunteers acted as crash victims.
