Why: While en route, the plane experienced engine trouble. The pilot shut down the engine and returned to East London where it made a safe landing.
Air New Zealand flight NZ-103 had to return and make an emergency landing at Auckland Airport, New Zealand, on July 16th.
The Boeing 787-900 en-route to Sydney, Australia had to return due to an electrical burning odour aboard.
The plane landed safely.
The passengers were rebooked in other flights.

Why: the pilot notified Shannon Airport control tower that it had a tire problem, performed a flyby to verify the condition of the landing gear, and then landed without further problems.
Lufthansa flight LH-981 had to return and make an emergency landing at Dublin Airport, Dublin, Ireland, on March 19.
The Airbus A319-100, flying from Dublin to Frankfurt, Germany, was mid-air when the crew detected an engine failure, prompting the plane to return.

What: American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82 en route from Palm Springs to Dallas Ft. Worth

Why: Prior to liftoff, the flight developed problems in the right engine and aborted the takeoff. The flight was re-scheduled (same day) after repairs were made.
A Sri Lankan Airlines plane en route from Colombo to Heathrow diverted to Stansted to make an emergency landing after two passengers endangered the plane. One of the passengers said “something” was in the luggage hold.
The 267 passengers and crew were uninjured. The two passengers were taken into custody. One is undergoing medical treatment in a hospital and one is at Harlow Police station.
The investigation is being handled as a criminal matter.
