    Emergency Landing in Turin

    What: Thomas Cook Boeing 757-200 en route from Turin to Birmingham International
    Where: Turin
    When: Feb 21 2010
    Who: 231 passengers
    Why: While en route, the plane developed a fuel leak, substantial enough for passengers to see it pouring out of a wing. Although the captain announced a possible bird strike, a fuel leak had been detected in the plane in an earlier flight. The flight had to turn back, and circled Turin for half an hour before making an applause-filled landing.

    The fuel leak was judged to be a bad valve, which was replaced prior to being ferried back to Birmingham.

    One wonders if the ferry flight was actually the incident involved here:

    Sun Express Vibration and Hydraulic Failure in Antalya

    What: Sunexpress Boeing 737-800 en route from Antalya Turkey to Aarhus Denmark
    Where: Antalya
    When: July 14 2011
    Who: 180 passengers
    Why: While en route, the plane developed vibration.

    The crew returned to Anatalya and made a safe landing. The issue was reported by official spokesmen as being a hydraulic problem (hydraulic pump failure), although a hydraulic problems would not cause vibration.

    Passengers were provided an alternative flight.

    Air China Flight in Emergency Landing at Gatwick Airport

    Air ChinaAir China flight CA852, en route from London to Beijing, made an emergency landing at Gatwick Airport, West Sussex, UK, at around 3:20 p.m. on September 7.

    The decision for emergency landing was made after the aircraft’s landing gear became jammed shortly after it took off at 1:30 p.m.

    The Airbus landed safely after circling over Sussex for around 2 hours to shed extra fuel. No injuries were reported.

    The runway at Gatwick airport remained closed for 20 minutes after the landing.

    Everglades Crash

    What: Bull Gator Air, Inc. Piper-PA 32 en route from Gainesville to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport
    Where: west of U.S. 27 at the Broward-Palm Beach county line in the Everglades
    When: Sunday Sept 20
    Who: 4 aboard. One “confirmed” dead though there are presumably no survivors.
    Why: After the pilot radioed in for help, the plane crashed in the Everglades while en route. The cause is unresolved and the search is ongoing for passengers’ remains.

    Armenia: S7 Passengers Held in Plane

    What: S7 flight from Moscow to Yerevan
    Where: Sochi
    When: Dec 24, 2009
    Who: not available
    Why: After the plane was unable to land at Zvartnots for an undisclosed reason, the passengers were held without food or drink for three hours on the plane, before being asked to debark into a customs check.

    Flybe Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Birmingham, England

    Flybe flight BE-385 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Birmingham, England, on January 24th.

    The plane heading from Southampton, England, to Dublin, Ireland, was diverted after crew needed to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
