    Marine Corps Aircraft Crashes in Hawaii; One Killed, 21 Injured

    A US Marine Corps aircraft crashed at Bellows Air Force Station on Oahu, Hawaii, on May 17.

    The tilt-rotor MV-22 Osprey was on a training flight when it crashed and caught fire during a ‘hard landing’ attempt.

    The aircraft was carrying 22 people at the time of incident, including 21 Marines and one Navy corpsman. Authorities said one Marine was killed while 21 other people sustained critical to minor injuries.

    The cause of crash is being investigated.

    Why: The landing gear retracted before the plane was airborne and made an emergency landing on a frozen lake—apparently not the first time this has happened.

    An Estonian politician asked the Estonian Civil Aviation Authority “how it is possible that the same company with a same type of plane could fall victim to two almost identical accidents at the same airport within a short time.”

    United Airlines Flight Rejects Takeoff After Bird Strike

    United Airlines flight UA-209 had to reject takeoff from San Francisco, California, on November 22nd.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane was accelerating to takeoff for Seattle, Washington, when the crew rejected takeoff reporting a bird strike.

    The plane safely returned to the apron.

    All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    United Airlines Flight Suffers Bird Strike Near PDX Airport

    United Airlines flight UA-1884 suffered a bird strike near Portland, Oregon, on February 10th.

    The incident happened when the Airbus A319-100 plane flying from Houston, Texas, was on approach to Portland International Airport.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    American Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Brazil

    American Airlines flight AA-991 made an emergency landing in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, on April 6th.

    The Boeing 767-300 plane flying from Miami, Florida, was on final approach to Belo Horizonte when the crew declared an emergency due to an unsafe gear indication.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Where: Buffalo
    When: Jan 28 2010
    Why: After takeoff, the right engine developed vibration, leading the crew to shut down the affected engine. The flight returned to Buffalo and made a safe landing.
