Wizz Air flight W6-1011 made an emergency landing in Liverpool, England, on September 7th.
The Airbus A320-200 plane flying from Katowice, Poland, was on final approach to Liverpool when the crew requested emergency assistance, reporting that a smartphone in the cabin had started emitting smoke.
The crew secured the phone while the plane continued for a safe landing. All passengers and crew members remained safe.
Norwegian Air Shuttle flight DY-7191 made an emergency landing at Paris Orly Airport, France, on July 6th.
The Boeing 777-200 plane took off for Newark, New Jersey, but had to turn back after the crew failed to retract the nose gear.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
Delta Airlines flight DL-762 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Nashville International Airport, Nashville, Tennessee, on May 8th.
The Boeing 717-200, heading from Atlanta, Georgia, to Chicago, Illinois, had to divert after it encountered turbulence, resulting in the separation of its right hand engine’s cowl.
The plane received substantial damage.
All 114 people onboard remained unhurt.
Eastern Airways flight EZE514 made an emergency landing at Aberdeen International Airport in Scotland, on January 20.
According to an airline spokesperson, “The captain operating charter flight EZE514 from Scatsta to Aberdeen received a cockpit warning indication en-route to Aberdeen relating to one of the aircraft’s two engines…The airport fire service was put on standby but was stood down shortly after the aircraft landed in Aberdeen.”
All 28 passengers and 3 crew members remained safe.
The incident is being investigated.

What: Lufthansa Airbus A330-300 en route from Philadelphia to Frankfurt
Where: near Halifax
When: Feb 5th 2010
Why: While en route, the crew flew into extreme turbulence, which dropped their altitude by about 600 feet. The flight continued without evasive measures to its destination and made a safe landing in Frankfurt.

What: Lufthansa Cityline Avro RJ-85 en route from Linz Austria to Frankfurt
Where: Linz
When: Nov 29th
Who: 61 passengers and 4 crew
Why: By the time the flight took off, there was smoke not only in the cockpit but also in the cabin. After the plane landed safely, one individual was treated for shock; otherwise there were no injuries reported. The cause of the smoke was not released.

What: Continental Airlines Boeing 737-700 en route from Newark to Boston
Where: Newark Liberty Airport
When: Jan 26, 2011
Why: On take-off, the plane filled with smoke. The pilot announced that the smoke was due to de-icing procedures, and made an emergency landing in Newark. Weather conditions at the time included snow, and freezing temperatures.
The plane made a safe landing with emergency services on standby.
