VivaColombia flight 8023 had to return for making an emergency landing at the Bogota International Airport in Colombia, on February 4.
The Medellin-bound plane departed from Bogota at around 19:00 local time but had to return immediately due to engine failure. Authorities said just moments after the plane took off, there was a loud bang in the right engine, followed by sparks and flames.
The plane landed uneventfully. No one aboard was harmed.
The cause of fire is not known at the moment.
Turkish Airlines flight TK-1899 suffered a lightning strike near Sabiha Gokçen International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, on December 6th.
The incident happened shortly after the Boeing 737-800 plane departed for Vienna, Austria.
The crew subsequently returned to Sabiha Gokçen Airport. Everyone aboard remained safe.
Lufthansa CityLine flight LH-1650 had to return and make an emergency landing in Munich, Germany, on August 23rd.
The plane took off for Sibiu, Romania, but had to turn back after the crew noticed fan vibrations.
The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
Martinair flight MP-8142 made an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on April 7th.
The Boeing 747-400 plane was flying from Nairobi, Kenya, when the crew reported issues with one of the engines.
The plane continued for a safe landing. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
Cathay Pacific flight CX-171 had to return and make an emergency landing in Hong Kong, China, on August 1st.
The Airbus A350-900 plane took off for Perth, Australia, but had to turn back due to an engine issue.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

Why: When the crew discovered an “unsafe gear indication” they burned off fuel, (Airport spokesman Miguel Aliaga said the pilot dumped fuel) and requested emergency services to stand by as they undertook an emergency landing on runway 28.

Why: When the pilot detected a problem in the fuel dispenser affecting the rate of flow of fuel to the engine, he requested to make an emergency landing in Kolkata.
Ten technicians were flown in to provide maintenance on the plane.
Passengers were provided accommodations (hotel or international lounge), and later booked on a Kolkata-Bangkok flight.
