US Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing after 2 Passengers, 14 Crew Members Fall Sick

    What: Sun Express Boeing 737-800 en route from Germany to Turkey
    Where: Thessaloniki airport
    When: Jan 22, 2010
    Who: 69 (?) aboard (62 passengers and 6 crew) (disagreeing sources)
    Why: After a crew member found a note written on a restroom mirror saying “Bomb. We are going to die today,” and an unknown person called the pilot and told him of a bomb on the aircraft, the crew diverted the plane to Thessaloniki airport.

    The plane was isolated and searched. However no bomb was found. An individual was briefly detained (first in Greece, later in Turkey) for having a pen with ink matching the message on the mirror .

    LATAM Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Belo Horizonte

    LATAM flight LA-8084 made an emergency landing in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, on December 20th.

    The Boeing 777-300 plane heading from Sao Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport, Brazil, to Heathrow Airport, England, was diverted due to electrical problems.

    Several tires deflated as the plane touched down.

    All three hundred and forty-one passengers and sixteen crew members remained unharmed.

    Melted Tarmac Traps, Delays DC Flight

    What: U.S. Airways en route from Reagan National Airport to CHarleston SC
    Where: Washington DC
    When: July 6, 2012
    Who: 35 passengers, 3 crew
    Why: As the jet was on the runway, it sank into the hot tarmac, and got stuck. THe cart could not pull the plane with the tires embedded. Everyone aboard disembarked so the jet could get unstuck. Efforts delayed the flight for three hours.

    A passenger reported online that there was a jerking motion going back and forth as if something was stuck and preventing the craft from moving, and then passengers waited 45 minutes on the tarmac fir a bus to the terminal.

    Allegiant Lands in Pittsburgh with One Engine Down

    What: Allegiant McDonnell Douglas MD-83 en route from Youngstown to Orlando
    Where: Pittsburgh
    When: May 26 2011
    Who: 142 passengers and 5 crew
    Why: While en route, the right engine was running hot and low on oil. They shut down the engine and diverted to Pittsburgh where they made a safe landing. Maintenance examined the leaky engine.

    A replacement jet was flown in.

    Southwest Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Cayman Islands

    Southwest Airlines flight WN-607 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, on April 13th.

    The Boeing 737-700 plane heading from San Jose, Costa Rica, to Baltimore, Maryland, was diverted after an electrical odor was noticed in the cabin.

    The plane landed safely. There were 123 passengers and 5 crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained unharmed.

    Swiss Plane Diverts to Vienna due to Engine Problem

    swissairSwiss International Air Lines flight LX-178 made an emergency landing in Vienna, Austria, on November 22.

    The Airbus A340-300 plane, en-route from Zurich, Switzerland, to Singapore, was diverted after one of its engines malfunctioned.

    The plane landed safely in Vienna after dumping off extra fuel.

    Everyone aboard remained unhurt.
