US Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing after 2 Passengers, 14 Crew Members Fall Sick

US AirwaysU.S. Airways flight US797 had to make an unscheduled landing at Fiumicino Airport in Rome, Italy, at around 1:38 a.m. Local time on December 6.

The Airbus A330, carrying 129 passengers and 14 crew members, was en-route from Tel Aviv, Israel to Philadelphia when a foul odor started to sicken the passengers and crew members.

Authorities said the pilot had to divert to Rome after 2 passengers and all 14 crew members suffered from red eyes and started vomiting midair. The plane landed uneventfully and all 16 of them were given medical treatment.

According to the airline, “The aircraft is being evaluated by our maintenance team to determine what may have caused the odor.”

Alitalia Jet Makes Emergency Landing in Rome

An Alitalia flight from Ancona had to make an emergency landing at Fiumicino airport in Rome, Italy, on November 5.

The incident happened after the right engine of the ATR 72 twin turboprop aircraft was struck by lightning while passing through a severe storm.

Severe Turbulence Prompts EasyJet Flight to Make Emergency Landing

easyjetEasyJet flight 8529, on its way from Gatwick to Naples, had to make an emergency landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport in Rome, Italy, on September 1.

The aircraft, with 154 passengers and 6 crew members aboard, was diverted after it experienced severe turbulence due to thunderstorms in Naples. According to some passengers, 3 stewards were injured as their heads hit the ceiling.

The plane was able to make a safe emergency landing in Rome after which the passengers were transported to Naples by coach.

According to the airline, “Unfortunately due to the turbulence one of our crew sustained an injury, and as such were met by paramedics upon arrival at Rome Fiumicino airport in line with our procedures…EasyJet would like to apologize to passengers for any inconvenience caused.”

Lufthansa Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Rome

lufthansabombardierA Lufthansa’s flight had to land in emergency in Rome due to a medical emergency, on the afternoon of June 27.

The flight took off from Frankfurt, Germany for Malta at about 1.22 p.m., however, soon afterwards, the Airbus A320 was diverted to Rome for offloading a sick passenger.

The plane landed safely. According to a Lufthansa spokesman, the plane resumed its journey to Malta after refueling.

Ryanair Plane Rolls Backwards and Crashes into Ciampino Airport Fire Station Building

RyanairA Ryanair Boeing 737-800, parked at Ciampino Airport, Rome, rolled backwards 40 metres and rammed into an airport fire station on June 5.

The accident occurred shortly after the aircraft landed and disembarked all the passengers.

The incident caused a damage worth of £200,000 to the rear stabiliser of the plane. The ‘tail wing’ of the £72m aircraft was torn apart. The garage of the fire station at the airport was also damaged externally.

According to a spokesman for Ryanair, the airplane was parked but was not properly secured by the ground handling staff of ‘Groundcare’. The airline has demanded an investigation into the incident.

A spokesman for Ciampino airport said: “We are investigating the cause of the incident and whether proper procedures were followed. We are aware of reports that chocks were not in place and that’s why the police have also been involved and a criminal investigation is also under way. Until that is completed there is nothing else to say.”
