Why: 300 feet from the runway, a sensor indicated smoke in the cargo compartment, flight 3890 landed safely in Dallas.
Incidentally, American Airlines flight 2461 issued an alert Thursday after smoke was detected.
GoAir flight G8-345 made an emergency landing in Goa, India, on August 30th.
The plane heading from Kochi to Mumbai, India, was diverted after the crew noticed a technical issue.
The plane landed uneventfully. There were one hundred and sixty-six passengers aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.
Air India flight AI-496 made an emergency landing in Udaipur, India, on October 2nd.
The Airbus A319-100 plane heading from Raikot to Delhi, India, was diverted due to a cargo smoke indication.
The plane landed safely. All one hundred and twenty-three people aboard remained unharmed.

What: Air India Airbus A330-200 en route from Tripoli to Delhi
Where: Malta
When: Mar 6th 2011
Why: After taking off from Tripoli, the landing gear failed to retract. The pilot diverted to Malta and made a safe landing.
So far, of 18,000 Indians expats, 9,200 people had been evacuated from Tripoli. Egypt Air has also been making chartered flights to bring Indian citizens back home in “Operation Safe Homecoming.” As of Mar 2, Air India had retrieved 6 flights worth of passengers.
UPS flight 5X-555 made a safe landing following a bird strike near Rockford, Illinois, on October 9th.
The Boeing 757-200 plane flying from Minneapolis, Minnesota, was on approach to Rockford when a bird hit it.
The plane continued for a safe landing. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

What: Buddha Air Aerospatiale ATR-42-300 en route from Bhairahawa to Kathmandu
Where: Gautam Buddha Airport in Bhairahawa
When: Sept 4 2010
Who: Captain Bhawana Pant, copilot S Rawal, two flight attendants and 4 passengers
Why: The crew asked permission for an emergency landing after receiving an on board false indication. (The autopilot auto-initiated, and presented spontaneous error code.)
Nine minutes after taking off, the Buddah Air flight returned to Bhairahawa after the flight developed technical problems. The cause of the problem is under investigation.

What: Flybe Dash 8-400 en route from London to Isle of Man
Where: Manchester
When: Dec 16th 2009
Who: 45 passengers
Why: While en route, the plane received a smoke alert, and diverted to Manchester, where they made a safe landing.
Passengers were provided hotel accommodations when the rest of the flight was cancelled.
