    Romania FireFighting Helicopter Crashes, 5 Ukranian fatalities

    What: Pecotox Air Kamov Ka-32 en route from Moldova to Turkey
    Where: Ostrov Village, Romania
    When: April 26, 2012
    Who: 5 aboard, 5 fatalities
    Why: Two civilian Ka-32 helicopters were flying to Turkey to be used to fight forest fires performing a visual flight in uncontrolled airspace. They were intending to stop at Ostrov MK Constanta Airport to refuel.

    Everyone aboard the flight was Ukranian. A team of forensic prosecutors and criminal investigators headed by Marius Iacob, have arrived Thursday at the accident site, a remote region of eastern Romania. Specialists from the National Institute of Criminology of the General Inspectorate of Romanian Police are assisting.

    After one helicopter crashed, the second landed safely, hoping to provide first aid for the victims. No one survived the crash.

    The Soviet Kamov helicopter can 13 passengers and two pilots. Only five were aboard the crashed helipcopter.

    Chicago Bird Strike

    What: United Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Sacramento to Chicago
    Where: Chicago
    When: Mar 8th 2010
    Why: On final approach, there was a bird strike. After a safe landing, the plane was grounded for inspection. Specific damage might be out there published somewhere, but I didn’t see it. The next flight was cancelled.

    Amazon Flight Crashes; Wreckage, Survivors, found

    A military C-98 went missing Thursday between Cruzeiro do Sul in northwestern Acre state and the Amazonas town of Tabatinga. Eleven were on board. Nine survived, rescued by Matis Indians who live in the area.

    The bodies of two plane crash victims were found in the Amazon rainforest Sunday. The C-98 Caravan wreckage was found about six feet deep in the river. One body was found in the plane, the other close by.

    The miltary mission of the plane was anindigenous community immunization campaign.

    The engine of the plane stopped in mid-air, the pilot landing (deliberately or not) in the Itui River.

    Egypt Air Skids in Kenya

    What: Egyptair Airbus A320-200 en route from Cairo to Nairobi
    Where: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi
    When: June 6, 2012, 3.36am
    Who: 143 aboard
    Why: While landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the plane veered off the runway on to soft ground, shutting down the airport and causing delays for the rest of the day. Passengers were evacuated with no injuries reported. Flights were diverted to Mombasa and Entebbe.

    Passengers disembarked on the soft ground and were ported to the gate.

    Emergency Landing in Belarus False Alarm

    What: Austrian Airlines Fokker 100 en route from Vienna to Minsk
    Where: Minsk
    When: Nov 29th 2010, 02:39
    Who: 81 passengers, 4 crew
    Why: On landing in Minsk Belarus, the crew reported an unsafe indication, later determined to be caused by a fauly sensor.The crew made an accommodation and made a safe landing. No injuries were reported.

    Engine Vibration Aborts Airbus Flight

    What: Air Canada Airbus A319-100 en route from Toronto to Liberia Costa Rica
    Where: south of Pittsburgh
    When: Aug 29th 2009
    Why: Forty minutes into the flight, the left engine developed vibration. The flight returned to Toronto and safely performed an “overweight” landing. Passengers debarked and transferred to a replacement Airbus.
