What: El Al Israel Airlines Boeing 747-400 en route from London to Tel Aviv
Where: London
When: Jul 4 2012
Who: 411 passengers
Why: While en route, pilot Ilan Margalit felt that one of the right side engines was losing power as it reached 26,000 feet. He shut down the affected engine and returned to London where he made a safe landing at Heathrow.

The Israel Times reported that the engine caught fire; however other sources say there was no actual fire. The plane landed safely on three engines. A replacement flight was provided on July 5.

The affected engine was a Pratt & Whitney.

In April of 2007 this plane was damaged when it “taxied over its pushback tractor.” No one was hurt in that incident either.

Turkish Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing after Bird Strike

THY Turkish AirlinesTurkish Airlines flight TK-2408 had to return and make an emergency landing in Istanbul, Turkey, on November 28th.

The Airbus A321-200 plane took off for Antalya, Turkey, but had to turn back after the left engine ingested birds.

The plane landed back safely. All 176 people aboard remained unharmed.

The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.

Bird-Struck Viva Colombia Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Western Colombia

Viva ColombiaA Bogota-bound Viva Colombia flight had to return and make an emergency landing at Matecana International Airport in Pereira, Western Colombia, on September 14.

The decision for emergency landing was made after a bird hit one of the turbines of the passenger plane during take-off.

The plane landed safely and none of 147 passengers aboard was hurt.

Tiger Airways Flight Diverted to Adelaide due to ‘Strange Odor’

Tiger airTiger Airways flight TT413 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Adelaide Airport, Australia, on March 15.

The plane, en-route from Melbourne to Perth, had to be diverted after a strange odor was noticed in the cabin.

The flight landed uneventfully and all 171 passengers were provided free overnight accommodation.

The airline said in a statement, “Tigerair Australia apologises for any inconvenience to affected passengers, however safety is always our first priority and always comes before schedule … The airline is currently awaiting the review of the engineers’ assessment and is prioritising travel arrangements to get affected passengers to their destination as soon as possible.”

Eastern Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Aberdeen

Eastern AirwaysEastern Airways flight EZE514 made an emergency landing at Aberdeen International Airport in Scotland, on January 20.

According to an airline spokesperson, “The captain operating charter flight EZE514 from Scatsta to Aberdeen received a cockpit warning indication en-route to Aberdeen relating to one of the aircraft’s two engines…The airport fire service was put on standby but was stood down shortly after the aircraft landed in Aberdeen.”

All 28 passengers and 3 crew members remained safe.

The incident is being investigated.

Boeing Statement on Japan Airlines Event in Boston


SEATTLE, Jan. 8, 2013 – Regarding Monday’s event onboard a Japan Airlines (JAL) 787 at Boston Logan Airport, we are working closely with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), our customer and other government agencies. JAL has reported that smoke detected while a 787 was on the ground after passengers disembarked and during cleaning was traced to the battery used to start the auxiliary power unit (APU).
As is standard practice within the industry, it would be premature to discuss additional details at this stage as the investigation is ongoing. However, nothing that we’ve seen in this case indicates a relationship to any previous 787 power system events, which involved power panel faults elsewhere in the aft electrical equipment bay. Information about the prior events has been shared with the NTSB and they are aware of the details.

Boeing is cooperating with the NTSB in the investigation of this incident. Before providing more detail, we will give our technical teams the time they need to do a thorough job and ensure we are dealing with facts, not speculation.

Bird-Hit Egyptair Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Heathrow Airport

EgyptAirEgyptair flight MS-779 had to make an emergency landing at Heathrow Airport in London, United Kingdom, on March 11th.

The Boeing 737-800 plane was on approach to the airport when a bird penetrated its nose, prompting the crew to declare an emergency. The plane was flying from Cairo, Egypt, at the time.

The plane landed uneventfully. There were 71 passengers aboard at the time; all of the remained safe.
